I've done this out of necessity many times and it works just fine. As Andrew says above a piece of wire to hold the aluminum foil tight helps.

Also as to the new Coleman mantles splitting or blowing holes on first lightup, I don't remember who on here to give credit for the advice to start them at lower pressure but it has dramatically increased my success rate with these so thank you! I'm curious why you call it blue gas, do they dye it in your area? If so that explains a mystery sludge I have in a lantern I recently got. And while I run mostly kerosene I have a couple lanterns that get whatever fuel is handy.
