That looks like it was well taken care of and stored in a controlled environment. That Old Timer definitely didn't neglect it. Did the guy give you any background about the Old Timer? I'm guessing he might have been the original owner. Congratulations Matt; that is a very fine stove you scored.

At the time I acquired a few lanterns and stoves over the last 2 or 3 years I felt that maybe I paid a little to much for them at the time of purchase. Looking back I think I got some good bargains on them compared to todays prices.

Could it be the birthday/ anniversary celebration of the date your town was established?
Here in SoCal they sometimes do the fireworks accompanied by loud Mariachi music when a young girl turns 15. They call it a Quinceanera.
Whole neighborhoods sometimes go nuts on the occasion.

It might be more expensive then just buying the eccentric block but It's possible that the eccentric block comes with a new valve assembly. Check with OCP and if so you can order the complete valve assembly from them.

I doubt it but I could be wrong. If I remember right; Thorium would produce a much lower radiation more in the Alpha or Beta catagory/range then what a low range Gamma Detector could detect.

For a Propane, that is a nice looking lantern Wrangler. Could it be the bottle your using isn't sealing properly? Maybe try swapping out the bottle you used with a different bottle.

Cajuncook; Just a suggestion - If you can't find just the metal eccentric block for your 286 you maybe could find a complete valve assembly for it that includes the metal eccentric block. Awhile back I ordered a 288 valve assembly from OCP and it came with the metal eccentric block.
