A new fuel cap was the first thing I tried when the safe 285 started needing constant pumping. I know how to test the check valve now, that will be my next move.

I am indeed fortunate to have three family lanterns. My pair of 285's from Mom's stepfather and a 1966 200A from Dad's.

Interesting, there was none available a day or three ago. I feel a little silly futzing over lanterns that are easily replaced with brand new but my pair of circa 1990 model 285's were bought by my grandfather when I aged into going on night fishing trips. I tried snugging the nut and the leak got a tiny bit worse. No harm in taking it apart right? As is I don't dare use the lantern anyway.

Here's another one worth asking. Can the valve stem and wheel from a 200A be substituted in the valve bodies of lanterns like 242 and 249?

The sound definitely did change. Hopefully I'll get into it over the impending weekend to confirm that there are no blockages in the air tube nor cracks. If I find that to be the case I'll do something to seal up the slip fit joints then tie a new mantle onto it and try it out.

Maybe I'll make this my first lantern overhaul. It's not a family heirloom, so I don't risk all that much if I turn it into a paperweight. At the very least I'll break the mantle off and confirm that there's a screen in the burner.

As much as I enjoy my wickies and pressure lanterns, Wifey is correct that battery lanterns are safer for bringing inside the tent. I think I have the plan figured out. If I can find a nice 228X plus buy a loose 220X ventilator; the lantern can change hats for whether I desire downward or outward light. Anybody see one or more flaws in my logic?

Another option is to sell all four of my 220's, none of which enthrall me, and find a nice 228 H or J instead. I think I'm talking myself out of the conversion project pretty quickly.

Are the bails interchangeable between F's and J's? More specifically; can I use a 228F bail and ventilator to make a 220J into a 228J, or a perfectly usable facsimile thereof?

A lot smaller, that's the way to go. Lanterns light up so nice with hot vapor generators I'm even adding cups to my CF lanterns.

Denatured Alcohol is readily available in Western Massachusetts. The reason I ask is for sake of eliminating a jug to bring with me on camping trips. Anybody ever substituted a wickie globe on a pressure lantern? The dimenions look to me like one of the Dietz globes might fit a 200A reasonably well and it's available in lots more colors than purpose made 200A globes are. Is it known to work fine? Thought to work fine?
