Re: Coleman Closing facility
Sad news. Seems to me Newell could care less about the Coleman brand.. I broke down and bought one of the new Coleman coolers a few months back, took it camping and was happy with it. Went to use it a few weeks ago and the lid had warped so much that it wouldn't even seal. I left it in the sun and i...

Re: 228E Questions: Check Valve?
If the check valve is leaking badly I doubt you are getting enough pressure into the fount to run the lantern. I have had good luck pouring vinegar into the tube and leaving it for a day or two, if that doesn't work I have also used boiling citric acid solution the same way. I've never had to replac...

Re: Anyone know much about JC Higgins single mantles?
Turning up the tip cleaner towards the end of shut down is a good idea. These little guys sound like little milspec's! There is no air stem on these lanterns, the end oh the pump shaft is threaded. That's your positive shut off, so while your pumping up the lantern I try to keep the pump centered a...

Thanks, the mantle that was on there was blown out on the bottom, maybe that's whybrucesheehe wrote: ↑Tue Jun 21, 2022 12:46 am That is the one with the good - safe pump - no crappy O-Rings.
When shutting off the lantern, turn up the cleaning needle to avoid a backfire (due to no screen) and blowing out the mantle.

No screen is correct. They were made by AGM and are the Kamplite clones. Look in the Tech Archives and there is an old thread by previous member Kyle who gives dating info based on features like the pump knob. Most made in the 1950’s. Stumbled across this JC Higgins this morning at my local Antique store. Don't know a thing about them but for 25 bucks I wasn't about to leave it it behind. Vent is almost pefect. Had a nice sunrise globe from a 50's 200A on it. The vendor was going to take it off and put it on a 70's 200A he had bu...

Re: Now I know why they're called The Powerhouse
The bulge globe is a number 660. The replacement listed in Steve’s note is the regular straight sided No. 330 globe that fits model 220/228 lanterns ( part # 690-048). So, the #660 is the "deluxe globe", I guess. I can tell you that I tried 637 and 639 globes in my 290A and they are too short and r...

The check valve is not supposed to be a perfect seal, just tighten down the air stem and you should have no leaks. Is cup leather or neoprene? WHat do you mean by "it's a little hard to pump"? It's neoprene. You can hear air rushing through when you take your thumb off of the pump hole. By hard to ...

Is the check valve leaking or is the neoprene pump cup bad? Assuming it is, in fact, neoprene. They tend to get little cracks in them and won't build pressure. The valve leaks air pretty bad. The pump cup looks good, added some oil. It's a little hard to pump but it builds enough pressure to light ...
