Re: Picked up Coleman 550b - bad smell

I recommend the o-ring set from OCP. The exact dimensions and type of material of the o- rings is critical. Also , it's important to remove the valve wheel, before unscrewing the valve. Do not remove the valve stem until the valve is removed from the tank. When reinstalling the valve, turn it on to...

My bad, I had just seen a youtube video where someone made a cap gasket from a piece of innertube.

Thanks for the insight!

Re: Picked up Coleman 550b - bad smell

I would replace the fuel cap gasket (if you haven't done so already), and the 3 o-rings, based solely on the age of the stove. This stove has a third, tiny o-ring inside the valve. BTW, OCP sells the 3 o-rings as a set: "o-ring set Canadian blue - S11" Thanks! Figure, if I have it apart, I might as...

Re: Picked up Coleman 550b - bad smell

Took a look at the stove last night after leaving it pressurized overnight and most of the day. Whole stove was covered in an oily film. Burner top was glazed over like it had been brush with oil. No pressure. Without pumping, or opening the valve, I put a flame to the burner and 1/4 section of the ...

Hey, thanks for the info Kansas_John! I guess I will be submitting another order to OCP! Poor thing had a seized pump, split filler cap gasket, missing o-ring, and quite a clogged generator...I think the previous owner took it scuba diving with him. A great project now the snows have come! - Seized...

Re: Picked up Coleman 550b - bad smell

I noticed that the bowl or a shield below the burners is damp today with some kind of oily stuff. My guess is that it’s some of the old varnish working out? Aren't you the guy who posted about all the weird fuel combinations? Was it running on straight unadulterated camp fuel? I have no idea what t...

Re: Picked up Coleman 550b - bad smell

Try washing/soaking bag in very soapy water or simple green, whatever you have on hand. Try some soapy water to check for leaks. If you can hear it bubbles work very well and will find it. Bubbles and heat don't mix try on cold stove just after lite up. BTW 66 now and on its way to high 70's with n...

Re: Picked up Coleman 550b - bad smell

Checked on the stove 30 minutes later and it was out.

Looks like it ran out of fuel and no pressure.

I'll fill and test cook time tomorrow. Have a feeling it will run out of pressure after 30 minutes.

I pumped it up and tried closing the valve. I could still hear a faint hiss somewhere.

Hmm. I just removed the pot support grate and straightened out the fins. Put it back and also straightened out the dents in the bowl. Only a few oz. Fuel in the tank. I pump it up around 30 times and light her up no problem. Flame is more even now. I pumped it up another 30 or 40 pumps. The flame ge...

Re: Picked up Coleman 550b - bad smell

The valve goes from Off to High to low. If I remember correctly, the small flame at the generator and burner is normal. If your jam nut has notches on it (at the center of the nut), it would be a kerosene generator. Yes. I checked for the notches. I was actually hoping for a kerosene generator. I g...

I just took apart the pump, using needle nose pliers. We'll, this was a suprise! LEATHER PUMP CUP! But dry as a bone. I sit it in a cap of two-stroke motor oil to soak. Picked up Coleman 550b - bad smell

It arrived a few days early! Came with a padded cloth case. Smells horrible! Not sure if it's old kerosene smell, or old gas. I think the latter, because is smells like an old garage. Initial thoughts... - Looks like the pump has no resistance. So my guess is the cup needs to be replaced. I think th...

The neoprene cups don't last that long and if you use them in colder weather they sometimes wont pump at all. use the leather cups. all it takes is a little bit of oil every now and again they last half a forever. Be sure to oil the cup before installing. Shawn Good to know! Thanks! Since I just pu...

Shawn,

Do you find that leather is better than neoprene?

Does it last longer? Or provide better seal?

I got the new pump assembly with leather pump cup, a neoprene cup, and a fill valve with schraeder valve on it last night. I've had luck with stuck parts by applying tension to TIGHTEN just a little. Not much. Release, then try to UNTIGHTEN. Sometimes it breaks free.

You’ll see others recommend Seafoam in other places on the I net. I’m not a believer in using it in GPA’s. As mentioned, these aren’t gasoline engines. We pay more money for CF as it has less additives and keeps things running clean. Why would you add more additives? If a lantern isn’t running prim...

A couple more notes. When I said the O-rings on the valve stem might be bad, I was referring to the main valve stem with the red plastic knob, not the check valve.
