I think I have a copy of the honing guide you’re referencing. The few times I’ve used it, it preformed fine. In my case, it’s sort of idiot proofs the sharpening process, and at my skill level, it is appreciated.

I would think twice before using a diamond stone. I would first try either 0000 steel wool or a high count 1500-2500 wet or dry sand paper with it wet. I think a diamond stone would be too aggressive. Brass is soft. Just my thoughts.

Tom, I’m assuming that you pulled the CV and cleaned it. Did you clean the air stem? If I clean a CV and air stem, and it doesn’t function, I’ll replace the CV/stem. I guess I’m too old to keep fooling with a second, third, or fourth round of cleaning. I usually run carburetor cleaner through it and...

“From what I have researched it looks like you can run gasoline in a 237.” Yes you can run gasoline, white gas and even pump gas. It may not be as bright burning various types of gas, but shouldn’t be an issue. If it’s an issue just install a 236s gas tip. If I remember, the 236s has a larger orific...

Carlton, with the 236/237 bails, I have even experienced some success with method I posted. The reproduction bail, not so much. I finally achieved a little success by using a file and sandpaper. It’s a larger diameter stock, but sturdy.

Although removal technique is important, I try to find out why it is binding. I usually get good results by moving bail to the binding spot and remove it there. You can easily see what is causing the issue. Do this with the vent and globe removed. Clean, bend or straighten the bail ends. May take se...

Ken, if you’re running a Coleman kerosene model, and a 639 is, try Pancho’s suggestion. You might have to up the percentage of CF to your #1 diesel to achieve better results. You can try 25CF/75 D, 50/50, and 75CF/25D, or any mixing percentage you want. You probably already know that you can run str...

The best mantle that I have found for the 236/237s is Coleman’s 1111. They have been out of production for years. You can find them, sometimes, on eBay, but they’re expensive. You might try a vinegar boil for about 15-20 minutes then turn the heat off and let the burner parts soak for a couple of hours. I do this with most of my old lanterns. So far, it has been working. After they cool use your pokers, prodders, and reamers followed by a water jet from a garden hose then...

Or, if it cleaned up nice, you could use VHT clear and it will cure by the heat of the running lantern. I think Toby passed on this advice awhile back. He stated that for a 220, cage frame outside of globe, this will provide sufficient curing while the lantern is running. He also stated with frame i...
