I use Citric Acid with hot water and then wool away with 0000 steel wool after soaking. Got the trick from our in house practitioner Dr Coleman. He has a thread I believe in the how to.....

When I store all my lantern dry, I open the valve all the way so it does not compress the spring in the F/A tube - this way no need to stretch.
