You can soak a rag in hot water and lay it over the adhesive and it will soften it. You may have to do it more than once, but it won't damage the paint. If that is what your trying to accomplish. If you have a steamer it will do the same thing but you have to be careful.

I do two coats of VHT Flame Proof Satin Clear. Then cure in a toaster oven. Then two coats of car wax. Always works for me.
