The 290 will work on a 295. But I think the compression nut is a dif size?

I would not recommend using galvanized metal for anything that gets that hot. It releases Zn oxide which is not good for lung tissue.

Now in your case it’s a small piece of metal and if you only use it outside the risk will be rather low as long as you don’t smoke.

+1 on all the good advice above. And one thing I try before replacing the packing is to loosen the packing nut just a bit. Then heat the valve right on the nut with a small butane torch. Then retighten. I think this softens the packing material a bit and allows it to reform better. Of course, empty ...

Use a magnet - it the lumps still it is rust. Could be rust with other stuff - crumble into small pieces and retest with magnet. If it all sticks it's all rust.
