Testing Coleman Mantels - I need your help!

I'll participate, although my gut feeling tells me it's an exercise in futility. I'm a newbie, so I don't have any experience with Peerless mantles. I do have some old silk lites that were found in a base compartment but I don't plan on burning them. I'm going to order some Peerless to use in the fu...

I'm not going to give up on these quite yet, one leak is just a pin hole, the other is a little more I think. Going to get some Caswell sealer after the New Year and read up on the process in the meantime.

I hope to at least get the one with the pin hole leak fixed so I can try all the d...

I'm starting to wonder if there is another reason the 275 lanterns are called "turds" besides the color.

I got two in a lot purchase and finally got to inspecting/cleaning today only to find BOTH founts are leaking fuel out the bottom due to rust. I'm bummed since I ordered a red and ambe...

Pressure remains in the fount, it whooshes out as you described when I remove the cap. I have spun the cleaner tip probably over 100 times, This lamp has been sitting for probably 30-40 years before I dumped all the old fuel and oiled the pump cap and changed the fuel cap.

Clogged genera...

No change, fount is almost full, soaked pump cup in oil. Pumped 30+ strokes, seems to build pressure, close & turn pump handle, open valve 1/4 turn rotate cleaning wire handle, hear hissing & smell gas, mantles will not light. It does not spit or sputter, will only hiss for a little while (1 minute?...

It's hissing, not spitting. Fount is just 1/4 full. I just read on another thread here that it should be full or close to full. I will add some fuel and troubleshoot per your advice. Thank you!

If the cap gasket is the source of the pressure leak, couldn't I swap a cap off of one of my other lanterns 288 CL-2 or 295 to test if the fount will hold pressure?

Ok, the fount was not holding pressure, so I unclipped the C clip, removed the pump and the pump cup was not completely dry so I oiled it a few drops. Reinstalled, it seemed to build a little pressure, but not enough to light. I could hear the gas when I opened the dial a 1/4 turn.

My th...

Refilled with fresh fuel and attempted to pressurize by pumping. Fount would not build pressure.

288-700 CL2 questions

Thanks for the quick replies, I will disassemble it and see if I can get it working.

This is my third Coleman lantern from the 80s. I remember the ones my Dad had when I was a kid growing up in the 70s and 80s. I prefer these over the newer ones.

Thanks again.

288-700 CL2 questions

I picked up a used 1984 model Coleman 288-700 CL2 at a thrift store for $5

It came in the original box and showed very little wear and only a small amount of surface rust.

Inspection revealed the tank to be clean and free of rust, so I filled it with fuel and attempted to ligh...
