Re: How to choose a 327/437
Most old AGM lanterns in general are cracked. Most but not all. for some funny inexplicable reason some AGM lanterns DO NOT CRACK. Doesn't mean I trust them-I don't, but over the years I have replaced many AGM founts with crack free originals. And only one or two cracked after I replaced (and repla...

I used to run a 327. I could never afford a 427. But after I retired I dropped in a 427 and have never looked back.

so, the blue and green have dye mixed in with the raw material that makes the glass. JAFE used a proprietary ion absorption method that stained the glass really only one color. Starts out yellow and darkens over exposure time to red. And it is only one kind of glass-borosilicate glass and it is in i...

Re: What Akron models have tapered generator?
I'm good with Coleman's instructions for the use of the 007 wire pick. but I have to wonder, since the tip has been removed from the generator body, what difference would it make which end you inserted the pick into? Maybe to preserve the diameter where the gas exits?

interesting. I have an August 1945 242C. It has a rather small side stamp, (unusually small) including "made in USA". some brass parts too, but steel gland (valve) nut. It is marked "242C" on the collar.

that 12-51 is a pretty desirable piece. It has blackband parts on it. Also has the bug cap over the air tube.
I've been told that there was a 12-51 blackband as well. My earliest one was a 2-52.

They are the exact same distance as the ones on steel frames that do not glow. That's pretty hot. How close are the frame members to the mantle on these lanterns?

the air tube is nickel plated. The other parts are plain brass. The band and frame are painted. My black band is glossy black, very thin high solids paint. The frame is flat or semi-gloss black. I do not think it is gun blued. The frame hold down nut is plated silver.

that is a common problem with those frames. The stainless they were using back then wasn't so good. a good steel frame would actually be an upgrade. I might get some flack for saying this, but the repro frames do not burn as well as a stock frame. IMHO it is the bend(s) in the air tube. I don't thin...

It's not really, if you've worked in a machine shop and learned the US system, with drills and taps all based on the 64ths system but in thousandths of an inch. When they had the opportunity the US should have switched to the metric system. So much simpler.

With a petromax the mixture velocity slows down and the flame creeps up into the burner tube. A screen is mandatory but you sort of do want the lantern to burn strong. I'd lay that U tube on a brick and heat it with a torch to be certain it is not cracked. those parts are castings. Or just swap it f...

I think most Colemans used Pyrex, which was trademarked by Dow Corning. AGM et al used glass made by McKee Glasbake or MacBeth Evans and could not use the word "Pyrex". The Coleman globes I posted may have been made by someone other than Dow Corning. I say that because those globes were concurrent w...
