The frame rest is unique. It's not a frankie. The person selling it is an old time coleman employee. He states clearly what it is.

well, mechanically there isn't. "Major" was an early name Coleman used for the 236. Just like "Empire" was used for the 237. In both the US and Canada. And they were marked as such.

I don't think original factory coleman cups had a smooth side. I also think either side seals adequately, but this thread addresses the question of which is better. so I have engaged here to ask why. I offered a couple theories but someone should be able to give me a logical reason for it. Without a...

Re: leather pump cups
if you have enough lube in there anything will seal, but in the absence of lube, a smooth continuous sealing surface, seals better. Just my opinion. Rough rings would not seal very well either. I don't think I am overthinking anything. Actually I think just the opposite. You could argue that the rou...

thanks Carlton. I will add it to my file of US Empires. Everyone keeps track of something. For me it's these.
Another member has a US Major of about the same vintage.
also did it have a solid pump cap or a stamped one?
Again thanks

I do not recall ever seeing a Preway ad saying it burned both. Almost any lantern will run on kerosene if it is preheated. If someone has such an ad (old sears catalog?) would you post it? The tricky thing about Colemans, and other instant lighting lanterns is the vapor or ignition circuit. As any a...

Agostino helped me restore a D41 236, made in Canada. it took the exact globe my 41 237A had. no difference. But another early 237 (Empire) I own has the same logo but with the word "pyrex" on the back. They are early globes and look quite similar to yours.

Pretty sure the first 242Bs made used an "A" fount with no sidestamp. actually they are great lanterns because the B sidestamp caused cracking at the ends of the sun rays. Re: 242B/242C factory changes??
the 242C valve is opposite the valve on the 242B. That confusing change is where it all started. The small side stamp was used but for a while the C had no side stamp. IMHO the side stamp was the reason for the change. The large stamp was prone to cracking right at the end of the long sun rays. (I h...

clean it with EZ off, rinse it and dry it. That should remove the black. then use naval jelly and it will cut the tarnish. don't leave it on too long, it can etch. rinse with water and scrub with a toothbrush. Rinse real well.
Then polish it.
Then polish it.

how many lanterns actually came with white letters? Steve's Akron shows traces of white indicating it was white at one time. But I've never really seen a Coleman with even a trace of white in the letters. Does anyone have an original Coleman Quicklite that has white letters? Does anyone know? Larry?

it's easy. Use a white grease pencil or lacquer stick and rub off the excess. I used a sharpie to edge my letters a bit so it looks neater.

It’s well established what causes the blue ones but purple ones are a mystery. Actually you are looking at two different colors. Straw and blue. They correspond to the heat the part saw. some, even most AGM lanterns crack spontaneously. there is no external stress. only forming stress. AGM cracks are usually straight, vertical, while Coleman cracks turn and meander somewhat. I wonder if the methods used for forming differed. Deep drawing Vs. spinning for example.
