Looking at your pic that shows the gen, look near the bottom screw, looks like a little bump there. My guess is that your reflector is tweaked a little and if you straighten it out (very carefully) then then burner would be below the grate. Steve I've seen the stud I pictured on many vase lamps. They are not thread but just tapered at the top. I've seen them before. Go look at your vase lamps.

This is not threaded on top, it is tapered to make it easier for a finial to drop on it. It is the same "stud" that a finial for a vase lamp goes on. Someone probably added it just like Steve said.
