I've had good luck with Simple Green and 0000 steel wool, with Bon Ami (hasn't scratched yet!) on tougher stains.

I received one lantern, one time, from a seller on the 'bay, about half full of fuel. It wasn't stale or bad fuel, and the cap was tight (no leaks into packing), so I considered it a bonus.

I've always used the flat gaskets. However, after learning some years ago of the use of O-rings for badly rusted filler lips, I bought some fuel resistant O-rings, the first of which was for a 132A lamp. Nice light up, Dan, sounds like you had some interesting service. I wanted a cross-rate transfer into the Seabees, but in the late '80s, "spooks" (CTs, etc.) were still too critical and they wouldn't allow it.
