Re: Tried my hand at local auctions

Whale oil burner would extend down into the oil and wouldn't have an adjustable wick. They were adjusted by pulling a bit more wick up with a pick. It is a rather short burner, so it'd be sensitive to flash point and fuel level along with proper wick fit. There may also be an air vent that's plugged...

Wickie looks like it might have the wrong fuel or wrong wick. I can't even see the wick. I did dry it out and put kerosene in. Same result where the fire spreads and I scramble to put it out. It comes out of the little hole the adjuster goes through, then spreads all around the burner area where it...

Beautiful lamp. Model B burners are my favorites too. Shade looks like a 14" from a hanging lamp. It mounts on the rolled over lip. Their mass makes them hard to ship in one piece, so that's an extra score. 2hanging.jpg Aladdin had beautiful 14" parchment shades that would make the lamp much easier ...

The return trip with fuel vapors in the fount may be an issue. Call the TSA at RDU and bombard them with questions. They're supposed to be the experts. I flew to Japan with a can of VHT spraypaint and two gallons of aircraft coating remover in my carry-on bag. Bet you couldn't do that now.

You could carry a folded up, prepaid Flatrate box and a roll of tape. RDU has mail drop boxes in the terminal. I always waved at a skycap and told them that I was travelling with a checked firearm. I had to look them up to see how they worked. Without an open flame it looks like you'd need to be careful to catch the vapors alight without bumping the mantles. I always use spray oven cleaner. No worries about container size or waste disposal. Put a trash bag over a plastic bucket outside for a stand. Wear gloves. Let it sit 20 minutes and scrub gently with a potato brush and old tooth brush.

Rinse thoroughly. That will get you ready to polish.

Looks like a 220B. Vent looks correct. How is the bail attached? Cotter pins, key hole slot? The key hole will only line up and allow the bail to be removed when it's hanging straight down, so the lantern has to be disassembled to remove it.
