I did some of the same things as well as others sometime back, labeled salvage a generator. There are times when you need to fix what you have in hand! Like out camping. Not to mention experimenting can just be fun.

BTW, locally in most places where you can find a petroleum distributor, you can purchase "stove oil" from the pump that meets the low sulfur standard and is the same as #1 diesel without the road tax .
