Re: CL2 288 lantern eccentric block

Yes, you can tell which type by removing the genny and taking a peek. The metal one is shiny aluminum or white-metal looking. The plastic one is a dark color and has a fiber/resin appearance.

I don’t know the dates for the plastic/metal eccentric or how the heat shield use corresponds with it.

I had and 11-‘80 and currently have a 3-‘81 both with the “Made in USA For” above the parallelogram. No Pyrex logo. Neither had the x-xx numbers at the bottom.

I believe both are original—the ‘80 was unfired and the ‘81 isn’t too far behind it.

Okay next question, how tight of a fit is your generator in your air tube? If there's much gap on either side it can cause a similar issue you're describing. I wouldn’t say it’s any worse than my other lanterns. Here’s a couple pics for reference. https://i.postimg.cc/yN7rGQrW/0-F785-D68-9-A8-E-4-F...

Yea, the valve needs to come out. Mark the bung and the fount so the clocking doesn’t change in the event the bung spins in the fount. I’d use some 95/5 solder and a bit of paste flux. A small torch would be better than an iron, too. Filling the fount most of the way with water is good—at least to t...

Well, it’s mostly special since the painted Ds weren’t made for very long.

There is another painted D with a solid black valve wheel—looks like a big 242-type with no direction disk. That’s another quite uncommon bird.

A fresh o-ring will definetly keep any air from seeping past those threads causing a slow depressurization. You can check it now if you want to by pumping up the empty fount and dipping the genny tip into some water while the fuel valve is off.
