A small meet up at Black Butte Lake, good time

#1

Post by FishNChips »

MartyJ and I planned a meet up this last weekend. Our friend Ken and other friend Paul came along, Unfortunately WoodsFisher (Lyndon) couldn’t make it.

We went to Buckhorn Campground on the north end of Black Butte Lake. Not knowing weather and road conditions this was paved and on a hill over looking the lake. Only issue was they lost power so did not have any running water. We had water jugs and Paul and My trailers have bathrooms so no issue.

Marty hit an antique shop on the way and found a nice 220B. A new gasket and it fired right up in camp with the original silk lite mantels.

Some great meals. Marty and I brought our Basford stoves to compare and cook on. First night was Bengal BBQ Beef skewers, rice and rolls. Second night was beef and barley, last night we had fillet with mushrooms, rolls and yams. Some great meals. Lots of rolls, bacon and eggs for breakfasts.

We took a day and did some rock hounding for poppy jasper, red and yellow jasper, basalt, obsidian and fossils. No fossils, but some nice jasper and jasp-agate.

We also visited the Newville Cemetery. Lots of 1800s graves, local family names and a lot of history.

Great trip. Here are the pictures.

My friend and I stayed at a CG there quite a few years ago, thought there was only one there. Been awhile, we were on our motorcycles.

Great bunch of pictures, Matt; I never tire of seeing the way you and Marty set up camp. Really neat, all that vintage gear, and pretty scenery, too, where you go.
And then, there's all that great food... :cf_drool:
Interesting old cemetery, too; reminds me of some of the old ones around here, with graves going back to the Revolutionary War period.

Matt got the title wrong! Should have been “TWO BASFORDS CAMPING”.

Great trip, good friends, good country. I think a lot of these little out of the way spots are overlooked. This is an irrigation lake that is a popular summer fishing spot but it was well worth the visit in February. We are hard tasked around here to find public land to camp in lower elevations in the winter, this was great. Some of the poorest ag land you could find as the entire area under what little top soil there that exists is nothing but potato sized rocks. But it does make good rock hounding. I came home with a bag full, I don’t think anything valuable but interesting and pretty.

For February the weather was great. Northern California gets its share of cold and wet weather but every February a week or so of false spring usually shows up and if you time it right you can have a good camp trip without being washed away or dressed like the little brother in the Christmas Story movie. Looking forward to the next trip.

Love the old stoves and especial the KK3!

I've never been to Black Butte that I can recall - that looks like a nice place for some winter camping. Bet its super hot in the summer!

What a quality product. Made in June of 1939. This one wasn’t babied. Like Matt said, we changed the washer and oiled the pump. Ran all weekend (much brighter than the picture) on the mantles that came on it. It had seen some action, a dent or two, nick in the enamel and it had a red globe and somebody had put a copper colored stove cap on it. Easy fixes but may leave it as is. Good camp lantern.

Looks like a nice meet. That pierced metal shade looks really nice with the lamp lit.

I see everyone is looking at the details. Yes, Matt and I haven’t met up in six months so we’re exchanging a lot of items we had picked up for each other in both GPA and other good junk. We both share an appreciation for early 20th Century things including GPA’s, cookware, clothing styles ,etc. sadly, neither of us took many detail pictures. GPA’s in attendance were KK #3,
Coleman cabin stove (thanks again Duane), 243, another 220B, a 222, the two Basfords and a nice 119 Slant lamp Matt gifted me. Can’t wait to get out again but won’t be soon. I am hoping for the May get together at Finley.

We were definitely having fun with a vintage flare. Some early GPAs, clothing, and early music playing really sets a nice mood. We try to match our cook gear and accessories to the era of the stoves and lanterns. Just a fun off shoot of the hobby.

Some of my “finds”. Matt says the red and yellow speckled is poppy jasper. I put the prettiest on the window ledges of my shed to remind me of trips.

Looks like a good time all the way around, and yep it is hard to find lowland spots in the winter that arent mud pits. Looks like a pretty place that time of year.
