Post by CaptainFantastic »

Last weekend I was at the annual meeting organised by Ruedi located in mid-Switzerland. I was only there for a few days at the tail-end, but still had a warm welcome from the guys I have now met several times, and also some new faces. In fact, I met a met a fellow concert photographer whom had no idea was into lanterns - small place this Switzerland!

I missed seeing Erwin as he had to leave before I arrived, but I did get to chat with Erik (aka Colag).

At least I had a chance to get two lanterns going (202 and Burg) as I've been way too busy lately to clean any up, or to even post on here much!

Here's a few photos, including our van we camped in, and view from the campsite.

The four on the left are the ones I brought with me: a 202, Burg, 200 and an Xmas. All from members here, thank you!

Shane, can you not get the VW California at all over there, or just certain models? This is the 'Beach' which has a pop-up roof but no kitchen (I have enough stoves so don't need one in the van LOL). It also has the diesel heater option, and I can add 2 captain's seat to fit 7 people. It sleeps 4 (2 up, 2 down).

Yeah, the meet in Switzerland was graet again as always. Unfortunately no chance to meet Ian again but talked on the phone.
We were a few days early and took the chance to explore the region some more. Fantastic sceneny and perfect weather.

Thun city castle:

Driving along a lake:
lake.jpg

the most popular snow covered mountains:
mountains.jpg

and a hike through a gorge:
gorge.jpg

Since we were that early I had a chance to find some flea and antique markets. This is the first time I was successful and bought some stuff:
From L to R: Turm wick heater, 2 pressure lanterns (one with top reflector) made by Eugen Schatz, Switzerland, an Embury Air Pilot wick lantern, Swiss Army carbide lamp, Standard lantern (Made in Germany) and an Optimus 200P from Sweden.
Front row: Swiss candle lantern, tiny rape oil lantern, alcohol iron and small blow torch. I was lucky to get some of the items dirt cheap.
Then I bought a 243B from our host and all lanterns cleaned up nicely.
I'm totally happy. ;-)))

That's the nice VW California that's not available in North America. :-(The irony is it's probably not California CARB compliant lol! Nice pics OP! The big Tilley looking spotlight lanterns are something I'd love to see in person, I've only seen pictures.

Hey guys!!! I'm still alive. Thanks for the comments on the photos.

No idea what the emissions rules are in CA but over here they are pretty strict anyway. Lots of cities are now banning diesel cars over a certain age or emissions standard. But the California is awesome and it's a shame you can't get it!

@Steve - these are HASAG 551 models (L and LD). But they were imported to Switzerland and given the nice label and a unique number by Eugen Schatz of Zug (Kanton/City not far from Zurich). They burn CF rather than kerosene even though they have that nifty pre-heat arrangement which you fill using that cute little 'pot' on the front you can see with a lid. Sometimes you get them in the big army boxes, but more often they are found as a single. Even here the price is around $200 or more unless you know someone who knows someone, or you find it in the wild...

Thanks for the great explanation Ian.
Couldn't have said it any better.
I was lucky to find them in the wild, much cheaper than what Ian says is market value.

Ian, that brings back lots of memories! I lived in CH for 13 years and I was in Zug most of the time! Beautiful place, and as you said, in the middle of the country which makes getting around fun and easy. Nice score, thanks for the pics! Cheers.Dan

very enjoyable post. beautiful country like I have never seen.

The scenery is awesome. I noticed something you just don't see any more here in California. There right next to the Tilleys with the large manometers. What a throwback! (ashtrays)
