Northern California Endless Summer Gathering 8/12 - 8/14

#1

Post by Rfieldbuilds »

Last hurrah of summer 2022. 8/12/22 - 8/14/22. Ocean Cove Campground.
Note the camping on weekends here sells out every weekend in the summer. You cannot just show up without a reservation unless it is for day use. Thats the official story. We have a limited number of vehicles that can fit in the group spot I reserved for us. Its 10 vehicles max, though they can be any size, so I suspect we may be able to sneak an extra ir two in.
For sure, anyone can come in and use day use at only $7/car. Camping is $40 a night, $80 total. Must be paid in advance through PPFF. Note that I hear tell some who are able will be arriving early to start the festivities.
Thanks for looking. Hope to see some new faces this year.
Questions answered here. Payments through Pm.

Eek! Only 100 in Santa Rosa today. 77 at Ocean Cove today. Good old Pacific Ocean is a great air conditioner up here.

Matt and Marty. Got you guys locked in unless you tell me otherwise.

Hot here too, made 80 I think, opened many windows to warm my place up. We were bping up in the Bucks Lake Wilderness last night, lots of biting flies, specially this morning, a couple wanted to sample my coffee.
Randy, managed to get a better knob on my AGM 335 between yesterday and today.

Started prepping my kayak for the trip. I am in need of a pile of rock fish and ling cod. Any other kayak fisherman going?

I had to order some new gloves but found the rest of my gear. My kayak was in desperate need of a cleaning and go through (been 2 years since my injury/surgery). Bringing my radio and will be on channel 69. The lanterns will guide my way back to the beach 😉

My foot is still bothering me so don't know if I can do the backpacking part of my Oregon trip, would be home by this time if I did do my complete Oregon itinerary, might could do this but can't access PP since they require a mobile phone # now.

I sent you a PM Duane. Reply back to me there when you get a chance. Matt!!! Sure looking forward to getting a boat out in the water. I would like to see if I can get an ocean pole setup put together so I can head out with you if the weather allows. I've spent a lot of time on the water in that part of Sonoma County, but its been 10+ years since I've been out.

Same! I just got a new Eddyline 14 kayak I may bring. Its half the weight of my Hobie and simpler going back to paddle. Still working to strengthen my shoulder after surgery. Much easier to load on the truck! I also made a new battery for my shark shield. Saved me $350 for a factory replacement!

I am setting up my camper for better camping too. A micro-camper of sort as its simple and easy. My schedule is always such a mess I need something quick and easy.

Are you missing a cast burner? I drove up to Ishi the other day to get out and found a cast burner plate in the grass. I can post pictures if anyone is missing one. It was in the area of our camp so figure someone dropped it. Not sure if it was one of Duane’s freebies?

My schedual comes out on the 15th. I am hoping to have Wed-Sat off. I got assigned to graveyards for a while but will drive, sleep, drive till I arrive, lol

I bought a Kelty Sideroads awning to place over the back of my truck so if the weather isn't the best for tailgating, I will be covered while cooking or can relax under it too, can even stand up in it.
Grate might have been some I gave away, maybe Randy dropped one while loading.

Update is that there are at least 3-5 spots open for this trip. We have seven paid commitments for Friday and six for Saturday. Thing is, if we get extra vehicles in Thursday, we can get those into other spots and keep the 10 spots in group camp open. So in all reality the 7 listed about could be 4-5, and give us room for 5-6 more vehicles. Remember there is no limit on number of people, only total vehicles parked in the group camp space. Plus with Matt heading out Saturday, his spot is open Saturday night for a single camper space. Hopefully Karlm takes that spot.
Folks, come on out, even if its just for the day, on Friday or Saturday. Looking forward to seeing everyone, lighting up some cool stuff, and having some great times in a beautiful spot.

Another interesting note. Full moon is on Friday the 12th. We will be having some negative tides every morning. Tidepooling could be pretty amazing out there, especially Friday morning, though Thursday and Saturday will be great too.

Randy and I have been talking about a pot luck each night. Everyone think about what they might like to make and post it here. Everyone on their own for breakfast and lunch.

There is tons to do around the area too during the day. Glass beach in Fort Bragg. The old Russian settlement north of Jenner called Fort Ross that has guided tours ect. Bowling Ball beach north of Fort Bragg. Bodega Bay south of Jenner. The mouth of the Russian River where seals sun themselves and hunt salmon. Wine tasting. Ect ect ect. Tide pools at the camp ground. Or just relaxing on the bluffs.

I got Sat night off. Pure luck with my work schedule, so will stay till Sunday. I am excited about it working out like that!!!!

I am working on my truck camper setup so just need a spot to park. Won’t take up much room. Pot luck is tempting but I have a mental issue with group meals. I know its me, but will likely cook my own and join in. Be happy to share any fish I get for fish tacos but fishing is never a sure thing!

anyone looking/needing anything? Not much trade stuff and don’t plan on bringing too much (except for fishing), but can go through my pile if anyone needs anything.

Need to cast some more swimbaits and jig heads but have my boxes filled up. Lure making is another hobby.

Anyone have space Thursday night for Repo and I? I use a small canvas tent, but for Thursday I think I would bring a smaller tent that is easy to take down to make moving to the group site easier, assuming that those arriving early will have their own campsite, then would move Friday to the group site. Repo is well mannered, never has messed in his assigned territory.

Its all FCFS. No reservations.

For those coming out Wed or Thurs, they can get an individual site and move to group Friday AM, or stay at the group site Wed or Thursday nights per agreement I have with camp hosts at Ocean Cove Store.

Thank you Randy, I may take a northern route Thursday to Garberville area via Bridgeville maybe and camp south of Garberville in a CG. Been awhile since I headed west out of Red Bluff thru Eel River area. Or, go around Clear Lake and camp south of G-ville.

Update. One open site reservation left officially.

That said, we can get more cars in if they are willing to pay in advance, and those showing up Thursday possibly set up in an adjacent apace so they do not count towards the 10 vehicles counted in the group site.
This is official policy of the campground, but I also think its a lax policy. So please if you are interested let me know and I’ll work with our people arriving Thursday to be sure everyone can get in.

I need to remember to bring a few more stoves to sell. A Optimus 111 w/military style features, if a MSR Collector, a MSR MF stove w/o a pump or fuel bottle as I have three and could stand to sell one. Both in $100 range. Have only seen maybe one MF the last couple years on the bay. The 111 is of the style for kero mainly, but can burn CF. The burner has only been fired a few times, but in a repainted case. Maybe a extra Primus 8r, not Optimus 8R. Radius 46.
Randy wanted to see my AGM 335 lanterns. Maybe bring a 501 for a lighting/pyro demo. :) Will have to check what other extras I have.

Well, guess we can transition this thread to a buy/sell/trade thread and discuss food too 👅😜🤪👅

I’ve also got a couple hammered 111’s I’ll be bringing. Be interesting to compare to your Mil version Duane. I’ll bring my similar AGMs and maybe an early Akron. All untested. So if we get em fired up, they’ll be first lights for me. Probably be bringing more old stoves to play with. 1910’s-30’s. Mostly for fun, not for sale.
If there is anything anyone wants or needs speak up here.

As far as potluck. Friday night and Saturday nights, lets all plan on contributing an item to the communal food table each of these nights. Figuring everyone will be on their own for breakfasts and lunches. I’d rather keep it simple and let everyone bring whatever they want rather than say have x amount of people assigned salad/appetizer, x amount side dishes, x amount main course, and x amount dessert. So if everyone chose any two things from this list that would be great.
Appatizer/salad
Side dish
Main course item
Dessert

Sound good? Suggestions?

Still one unclaimed spot of the ten. Hope we can fill it.

I'm looking for a large pink cooler, prefer the diamond logo.

For the pot luck, I will go main course with my "almost world famous" barbecue balls. (Meatballs). And maybe I'll try to bake a dessert in an oven. Never baked in a coleman oven, yet.

I don't do potlucks too well, maybe I can bake up something in my oven or my brand, spanking new Optimus mini oven as mentioned by Keith @Majicwrench. Will test it on a trip here soon.
I've done gamehen, sweet potato, brownies, cookies, biscuits in my Coleman oven.

Yum, heck with trading, I'm looking to cut in line for dinner!
I have a couple lamps that I had to modify, a Akron and a AGM, not sure Randy could use the Akron as it is the one I had to solder over the hole the pricker mech went. The AGM was converted from match light to torch light and needs black paint, will give away both, no shade, done all I can with them, can use the space. Will see if I have room, don't have a big truck like Randy.
Much trading goes on early.

Is anyone interested in a sea of nasty green? I have around a dozen I need to get rid of cheap. 220E,F,H,J,&K probably asking $10 to $15 each for them depending on if they have a globe or not. They are all rough. If no one is interested I won’t bring them.

Anyone have a PW valve? This one is missing. Been in a box for three years.
Happy to buy or trade.

I am also looking for a globe labeled GrandMaster. It's 220 size.

I am getting excited. 115 here today. We drive to the mountains to “beat the heat” and its 105 up here 🥵

I am going to pack fast and light. Mainly camping and kayak fishing stuff, but will bring a few lanterns and a stove.

Excite to see the trade goods!!! Always excited about something rusty or unique.

I am going to pack slow and heavy. Lol. Bringing the 5th wheel, so lots of room. Hoping for a heat wave along the coast as we are going to do some riding up/down highway 1 and I don't like being cold.

Here is a link for the Friday and Saturday potluck. This is for dinner only as we will be on our own for breakfast and lunch. Just click the link and add your name and what you intend to bring each day. Randy suggested we bring two items each day.
If anyone has problems posting on the link just put what you’ll bring here and I’ll add it.

Cody and I (Randy) got our 2 items per day infilled.
Thanks for putting G-doc this together Mark. This may keep us from having 10 guys all show up with a bag of chips and some gatorade for group pot luck. Lol.

I will say, beat to keep it simple. I suggested to someone earlier six sausages and some mustard with chips easily satisfies the requirements. It need not be difficult to select a couple items. Heck, a block of cheese and some bread makes a fine appetizer. Also, thats low energy input cooking. We needn’t distract ourselves from lamps, lanterns, the ocean, and the fine company we keep 😂.

Now I'm confused. I already bought the bag of chips and the Gatorade. Two bags in fact. I mean, it's too many people for just one bag, let's be real. And don't get me started on the Gatorade. I put real effort into this part. Different sizes, flip caps, twist tops, wide mouth bottles. So many flavors, classic fruit punch, strawberry, every one of the frost variations, fierce grape (the other fierce flavors all suck), and the perennial favorite, orange. So then I have to read on here that nine other guys are bringing the same stuff? Forget it. I'm not bringing any of it now.
