Coleman 152a what do I need for a shade holder

#1

Post by Ohiohunter83 »

I finally got my 152a cleaned up and running well. It came with a hanging rod that screws directly into the mixing chamber. My question is what do I need to attach a shade on it. My CQ had a short stud that I screwed on once I got the shade holder on. The shade holder listed on OCP says for CQ lamps. Is this also what I want for the 152a? Also can I just screw the hanging rod over whatever shade holder I get? Any guidance is greatly appreciated. Thanks Drew

Are you wanting to run a glass shade or a 355 globe with a parchment style shade?

152a is a little narrow at the base to support a glass shade. It came with a parchment shade and 355 globe. The holders look like these.

Shades don't have to be original to be functional.

I agree with Chuck. It would be more stable running a parchment style shade, otherwise get your CQ holder and screw then slap a shade on it. It's yours too do what you please... Just show it off when your done 😉

I have the globe holders and it has the hanging rod as well. What else will I need to use a parchment shade. Can I just screw the hanging rod through the center of the shade?

You'll need the correct screw in the burner, and a finial would be the ideal way to hold the shade. Here's a not very good example.

Can you still attach the hanging rod with the finial?

That is awesome!! Thank you very much. I have never seen a close up picture of the way all of that goes together. That is the answer to all my questions. Thank you

So for us visual guys Toby, what is the best way to remove one of those that broke off in the mixing chamber without ruining the threads? I'm thinking about heating and quenching to start....

Have you tried an electric engraver? Old vibrating ones work like a mini air hammer to rotate small broken pieces in the desired direction.
In the case of the burner, either way will do, as long as it comes out.

Wayne lucky for me I have a milling machine at my disposal. I've done a couple on lanterns with steel vent studs. I believe it was Dean that made a guide to screw into the air tube threads of the mixing chamber with correct drill size and tap to chase the threads...

Would you heat it and quench it first? That seems to loosen crap up most times...

Heating and quenching and maybe a shot of oil on the still warm pieces would help.

I've saved a bunch of components with the engraver trick.

What is the purpose of the finial? It looks like it just slides over the rod and doesn't thread into anything.

The finial is two pieces and screws together from either side of the shade spider. It stays with the shade and because of its length, keeps the shade from rocking back and forth.

One of the beauties of this design is that you can run a shade that's a little too long by using a spacer to lift it higher on the handing rod. I Run a straight 8" shade that is 3" too long, but works just fine with a piece of brass tubing to hold it at the right height. Opens up lots of "period incorrect" but perfectly functional shade options.

Ok. It's all clear to me now. Thank you everyone. Just one more question. Where can I obtain a finial? It doesn't have to be original as I know they can fetch a pretty penny.
