Post by MG »

I've recently come across an early 249 scout missing its generator, i have posted some wanted adds but is there an equivalent generator from another lantern that will fit please?
Thanks.

the 249 gennys are getting harder to find and expensive BUT 237 gennys are plenty available and reasonably priced . dont know your skill level , but the 249 gennys is just a shortened 237 genny , same diameter different length . so ya cut down a 237 and re flare the bottom . my mind goes these place and i dont know but share them anyways

No steve. The difference is at the top. You will need more skills than just cutting a 237. It will require cut and braze to get it in the proper length

Thanks for the replies, I have spoken to Rob at OCP and he said possibly six months for a new generator, maybe a used one will turn up hopefully,
It’s a 1938 Canadian model with a very short, triangular shaped handle/bail which, so far, I haven’t seen a picture of another, it doesn’t look homemade but possibly is.

A triangular shaped bail would not be original. A 1938 model CA 249 Scout would have the normal looped 242A, 242K, 242B bail type.
1938 is the first year of production for a Canadian 249 Scout. Does your's have a letter eg. A,B, C, or D for the month period, or a number?. The earliest one I have seen is C 38.

I'd best keep an eye out for a spare then although i do quite like the one fitted, i expect it wouldn't take long to get burnt knuckles in use though!

Yes it has a C 38 stamped on it.

I'm not sure where you are located, but if you can get hold of an Ash Flash lantern (Made in Hong Kong) they have generators which I think are the same diameter and length as the Coleman 249 one. I'm a long way, 400km, from my collection at present to be able to check those two things for you.
However, the A/F, one from memory, does not have a screw in jet, but has a jet orifice in the top part of the generator. That orifice size may be different to the 249 jet orifice, as the A/F is a Coleman fuel lantern.
You may be able to drill out the top A/F orifice and thread it to take a 249 jet, and of course obtain or make the two 249 coils for inside the generator.
Depending where you are located of course.
It's fairly easy to find an A/F in countries like Australia and Canada, but maybe not where you are located. Just a thought.

Thanks for that advice, i am UK based and it doesn't seem as though there are that many Ash Flash lanterns or spares over here, but if a used 249 genny doesn't turn up then that may be an option, the two coils actually came with the lantern but sadly nothing else that's needed.

Hey Steve, did you get time to compare the 249 generator with the Ash Flash one. Are they the same diameter and length as i think they are?. I know the tip/jet is not the same.
I'm still way up north and won't get back home and my collection for another week.

OK Keith , had to practically tear it apart to get that genny off :-) ya its pretty much dead on same length shell , if you drilled n tapped it for a gas tip it would be a pretty nice substitute shell , but the pricker has that agm style connection not a hook on it . inside looks like asbestos wrapped hollow spring .

hope you two are doing well down there ?

Thanks for confirming that, Steve.
That gives me another option for making a custom 249 generator should the need arise. The fat tube is the hard part to find, as I have plenty of correct new 249 gas tips I bought from Mike some time ago.

Actually another source for making a custom 249 generator down here is to use an Austramax generator tube. Those ones are are the same dimeter as the 249 but slightly longer. So you need to cut a bit off the bottom and reflare it to make it the same length as a 249 one.
Easy to find an Austramax generator down here but not up in So Cal where you are.

Also if I’m not wrong the 249 generator uses the same pricker as the t66 generator

I use IMGUR to post pics. My phone store all my pics in google pics and I have to do is open the pic in photo's, then drag and drop in IMGUR. The just click on the proper link on the side for forums and paste it in your post here.

Here is a sample, took all of 15 seconds.
