M1950 issues

#1

Post by TwoCanoes »

I have an SMP M1950 from 1987. It appears that it may be unfired, but it has issues. First, it will not build pressure. I know the pump works because I used the pump on another M1950 I have, and that stove worked just fine. What's particularly perplexing about the lack of pressure is that I cannot find a leak, nor can I hear a leak when I pump it. Second, the pricker does not extend through the generator tip in the off position even though the eccentric appears to be working correctly and the pricker rod is properly seated in the eccentric block. Finally, some previous owner must have fiddled with the stove since the generator assembly is screwed into the tank with teflon tape (see photo). I assume the factory did not use teflon tape. I have not removed the generator assembly from the tank. Any ideas as to why the stove will not build pressure (even though the pump is good and I can't find a leak) and why the pricker won't extend through the gas tip? This is my first experience with an M1950, so I thought I'd get some advice before I tear into it further. Thanks.

Guessing a fuel cap mix up some soapy water solution in a spray bottle and spray it on the suspect area and look for bubbles

That's what I did - on every joint, including the fuel cap. And I dunked the tank from the seam down. The only bubble was a tiny, slow-growing one at the generator orifice. However, I'll repeat the test.

its usually the fuel n air gasket on these , pressure all bleeds out when bad . i almost always have to start there with this model . its a super tiny gasket and not easy to get the new one in place , i slide the new gasket over a blunted flush nail so its more like a punch line it up the fuel n air rod and just slide it down into its place .....thats my method . kinda like you always have to change the fuel cap gasket ? with this is made from the very same stuff , gets old n hard n needs replaced when serviced usualy .

Thanks, Steve. Are you talking about what OCP calls the fuel tube gasket (part S49) which is included in the M1950 Pump Rebuild Kit - K05?

It's priceless until someone puts a price on it.

Thanks for the offer. I'll finish dismantling tomorrow and put it back together as soon as the kit arrives. If that doesn't solve the problem I'll either swap the guts for the ones on my M1950 that works or trot down to Enterprise. I need to get this solved pretty soon because it's my daughter's birthday stove - she gets it in a couple of weeks.
