Is this a Yale Lantern made between 1917 – 1920?

I have not been able to find any definitive answers. As you can see in the photos there are no markings except May 13, 1919, on the air tube. The vent is 1 piece. The top has a small crimp that keeps it from coming apart. The fount is brass and the vent is also brass.

Look for stamping on the collar. They can be difficult to read and often found too low in the holes. It's made by Coleman for sure. If no stamping, it would be for another company.

Toby,

Thanks for the info. I have a later Quicklite and an early Air-O-Lantern. I was basing the Yale question on Terry-Marsh's website. (https://terry-marsh.com/coleman-us-lanterns-1914-1920/) He states the Yale lanterns had no markings. Mine is just missing the top piece.

That looks alot like mine from earlier this year.
Most of these are found without the fancy Yale finial.
There's probably a number of places these were sold.

Thank you!

When you post a technical help post or a WTB ad please help us help you by advising what part, lantern, dates, country of manufacture and image of the item you are looking for. Otherwise we may struggle to help. 🧐

To me a lamp without a shade is creepy!

After awhile, you can work on points for style!

IIRC, tabbed vent, 1919 patent and that frame bottom plate make it 1919, before they went to taller mica & *un*tabbed vent. Mica should be an even 5" tall, vs later 5 1/4". Altho, we know Coleman did "waste not, want not", in using up old stock parts, so it could be 1920... vOv

Coleman sold unmarked lanterns for years to other retailers/mail order/hardware. Herb Ebendorf always said they needed to make money and sold unmarked from the earliest years. Here is an image from a Sears Catalog from fall 1918. Sears sold a lot of mail orders nationwide. Unmarked. There seems to be a focus on things being Yale. Yale Manufacturing was their own company and when Coleman bought them out they became Yale Light. Everything after the buyout was the same manufacturing - Coleman - Yale same things - just unmarked and some marked Yale and the top nut. That top nut is even drawn in some of the later Sears images. Yale became their "generic" , unmarked Chicago division. After they filed the 1922 burner patent (LZ) it became their unmarked; sold to others lantern and lamp. Coleman dissolves Yale, buys Sunshine Safety and it becomes more their "generic" division. They bought out other companies as well. Coleman did a lot of marketing not under their own name. But it all comes back to being Coleman made.

I appreciate all the information!
I didn't realize they sold so many unmarked lanterns. It will go with my other early Quick-lite lanterns and have a unique story! Always good to learn something new.

Notice the drawing #6 support rod base is illustrated upside down as to actual examples assembled.
.
Technically there were 50 more YLQ lanterns shipped in October 1920 after the LZ began in July.
