Replacing funnel filter felt?
Replacing funnel filter felt?
I just found a couple of sheets of felt that I ordered from OCP this summer. They got set aside and forgotten.
I need to replace the felt on a couple of #0s and a #1A. I cut a three-inch circle for the #0s, but how the heck do you get the felt back into the rings? I tried it dry and now wet and am getting pretty frustrated.

Ooooh. Not possible, unless you are master Yoda and have the power of the light side. There are instructions on ccf somewhere.

Re: Replacing funnel felt filter?
I would cut a spacer for a funnel to hold the outer ring from going deep, and lay the felt over the mouth of the funnel. Then press the outer ring and felt so its held flush on the outside and seated on the spacer; now you can gather the fringe and start the inner ring to retain the felt. Once all in, remove the filter and then the spacer.

Timm,
If you follow Dean's instructions in the link below, it's trivial. This is one of those priceless posts from Dean that I printed to pdf to save. Pics are missing in this thread, so if you want the pdf, PM me your email address and I'll send when I get back home.

Re: Replacing funnel filter felt?
A #0 is 2" and you added 1"
the 1A has what looks to be 2X the width of rings to deal with
You added 1" to the 2" #0, so add 2" for the 4-1/2" 1A?

Re: Replacing funnel filter felt?
Silly question: Do you have the original felt from the No.1 funnel?
If not, I would wager the felt has to be large enough to go up the inside, over, down the outside, across the bottom, then up, over and down the other side of the large ring.
How about over-all felt diameter = diameter of large ring + (4X height of large ring) + a smidgen for trimming?

Re: Replacing funnel filter felt?
The old felts are distorted and can't be flattened back out to their original size. Tried that. I have an idea....
FWIW, 3" dia seems right for the #0.

IF, IF I can, I will try to add the pics to that post in the future. (Too late to do it in the past...) I do have them on a spare drive somewhere.

I was thinking maybe my Swansboro fishing fleet funnel didn't lose its filter from falling overboard. Maybe it was thrown overboard out of frustration. They did find a workable fix for larger funnels.

Re: Replacing funnel filter felt?
I'm guessing someone put them in upside-down. The open side of the rings should face up.
Use the butt of a drill bit--3/16" should fit nicely--to push them out from underneath.

Re: Replacing funnel filter felt?
I am a little late in posting to this thread however after reading it over the last couple of days I want to offer my suggestion. There is no need to involve any special devices and I just replaced 2 felt filters in about 2 minutes.
1) cut felt square about 3/8" bigger than the small aluminum frame.
2) place smallest frame on table with large opening facing up
3) evenly place felt over large opening of small frame
4) take larger frame piece and turn it with large opening facing down
5) push down over felt and it will lock in place with the smaller frame
6) trim off excess and install in funnel
From what I can see this looks just like other units that I have in which I did not replace felt.
No picture however if still unclear let me know and tonight I will post

Re: Replacing funnel filter felt?
First - Dean's instructions make it real simple to replace the felt.
Second - I found two issues with the felt I purchased locally. It is mostly synthetic (only about 10% wool), and more problematic is that it was very patchy in thickness. If you held it up to the light there were areas that were real thin and let a lot of light shine through (not really an efficient filter). The next width up in thickness was to thick to use.
So i bought some real 100% wool felt from WeirCrafts in Ohio (www.WeirCrafts.com). They have two types called EU and US. I measured the original felt and it was about 1/16". This is same size as the EU-type felt, the US-type is twice as thick (so maybe too thick?). So I got the EU version and when i arrived I noticed it was also a bit patchy, but mush less than the local kind that is only 10% felt.
So I came up with a way to have double thickness at the bottom that should better filter the fuel. You just cut an extra piece that is the diameter of the larger rings and slide it in between the ring and the larger piece before you wrap it over and around etc. When finished that extra piece is held securely in place by the larger piece - and there are no areas where the light clearly shines through. The photo below has some text that might make it easier to understand (and I borrowed the photo from Dean's instruction - I hope that was okay).
Next time I replace some filter felt I will take a couple photos.

Re: Replacing funnel filter felt?
After close inspection of my posting of Feb 23rd I believe the felt is not installed like it comes from the factory. Felt is supposed to wrap around and into the large opening of the bigger ring with the small ring sliding down inside the larger ring with the felt in between the sides of both rings. Fits a lot tighter inside the funnel this way because there now is felt between funnel wall and the filter rings. My easy way I see now does not fit nearly as tight however for the most part I think it will work just not as tight so some fuel could slip down the outside of the rings unfiltered. Only time will tell if this is a bad thing. Now to try to fit the felt on properly without frustration!
Sorry, but it's "Zed" not "Zee" for Z and a lot of "our" words end in "our" not "or" it's a Canadian thing. Eh!

You are correct - it goes around the outside or the bigger ring.
