Let's talk Hot Rays
I need a reflector for one of mine, it has a few extra holes in it. Anyone made one from aluminum woks or?
How about guards? Of 3 Hot Rays I have zero guards. I suppose if I could weld I could make some but if my aunt had different plumbing she'd be my uncle.
Has anyone ever seen an original Hot Ray alcohol torch? I figured out real quick a Hot Ray with a Jumbo R55 needs a Good preheat, I keep the mini torch on it till the stainless radiant starts to glow now.
Of my 3 none have good paint, I figure that big hot reflector might have something to do with that?

Re: Let's talk Hot Rays
I need a guard. Could get close from pictures, but if somebody has an original to copy it might be something that would be popular enough for a group buy, or for Mike to offer.
I've been preheating with a propane torch, but will try the lamp torch. The instructions show a torch that's similar in size to a lamp torch.
I'll have to keep an eye on this thread.

Re: Let's talk Hot Rays
These aren’t Tilley’s, I don’t think I have ever seen a Tilly like pre heater for these. Just pre heat it with a couple of matches or a pencil torch. All you have to heat up is the R55 generator.
As for the grate, mine is in storage on the other side of the state. I did give dimensions to Mike Wells and he made one.
The next time I go over there I will get dimensions again

Thanks Greg. Dimensions would be great.

That would be grate (sorry, couldn't help myself) if you could get those. I suspect if the Mikes wanted to mess with it they would sell on OCP.Rubing wrote: ↑Fri Jan 01, 2021 5:12 am These aren’t Tilley’s, I don’t think I have ever seen a Tilly like pre heater for these. Chuck I guess I never researched it deep enough I didn’t realize that they came with a Tilley type preheater and I imagine they all got lost before the grates.Hot_Diggity wrote: ↑Fri Jan 01, 2021 1:31 pm Thanks Greg. Dimensions would be great.

I was driving to the storage unit once or twice a week until about three weeks ago. I have 95% of my collection moved just boxing up parts now but on the next trip I will bring the grate home. The Hot Ray isn’t boxed up it is sitting atop other boxes.

Re: Let's talk Hot Rays
Somebody, I think it was Timm, posted a link on the old site from an online kitchen supply store that listed stainless steel bowls with pictures and dimensions. I think one of them was the correct diameter and shape to to work as a replacement for one of the Arc lanterns.
If you could find aluminum pan lids that listed diameter and depth on a similar site you'd be able to pick out a good candidate for a Hot Ray reflector. Pot lids would be more likely to have the nice rolled edge, and the hole in the center for a knob wouldn't matter.
The Hot Ray 480 reflector measures 14 1/4" in diameter and 4 1/2" deep. This pot lid might be close enough, although it's 15". Made in USA.

If anybody remembers seeing such a website, please pass it along.

I used an aluminum wok from Goodwill and added a new grate from a charcoal grill to my Sunshine Safety Mod. 15 to make it work:

It is just a wok lid. Wish I could remember where but can't. I just don't throw much of anything out if I think it has a chance of being repurposed or used for something.

Hey Mike, can we get a close up on that generator? Yours appears to be the original “480-299” type generator.Tigerfans2 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 02, 2021 10:39 pm 20210102_141421_resized-1.jpgI'm amazed how focused the heat output is on these things.

I just had to fire mine up last night and see how red I could get the stainless steel radiant. Best its ever run. I think I cleared some loose bits out of the generator and found its sweet spot. It was toasty!

Re: Let's talk Hot Rays
Give it plenty of preheat. If it makes an odd slurping noise while starting, shut the valve and see if fuel is running down the handle. This was the latest trick mine wanted to pull. My fault. I wanted to see if I could get away with a shorter preheat time. I can't, and I understand why Coleman recommended using the alcohol torch for preheating. I do read instructions, but I like to have a real understanding of why they want it done that way.
I'm the guy that had to see how badly a Remington Model 14 would jam up if I didn't use round nose bullets too. It's an unforgiving beast. .002" seating depth with round nose bullets is the total difference between feeding smoothly or not at all. At least it doesn't threaten to catch on fire.

I use a tilly torch, probably overdo the preheat but prefer that to the alternative
