Pump tube
I am restoring a 220. The font is in good shape except for the pump tube. The walls that the pump cup rub agains are rusty and it makes the pump difficult to use. Can I "hone" the inside to clean it out? I have it in rust remover but wanted to clean up the walls int eh pump tube if I can. I am thinking of a hone like you would use in a drill. Thoughts?

Brake cylinder honing tool.
My friends don’t call me “Lantern/lampie Levi” for nothin’,if they did call me that.
Looking for bday lanterns 8/38, 8/41,
10/25, and 8/07
The biggest lie I tell myself is ”I don’t need to write that down, I’ll remember it.”

" Can I "hone" the inside to clean it out?"
I'd just use some maybe 400 grit auto body wet sand paper around my finger to smooth the tube walls of any protruding rust.

Re: Pump tube
Take a piece of 5/16 tubing long enough to reach the bottom and cut a 1/2 to 3/4" long slot in the end with a hacksaw. Slip in a piece of emery cloth into the slot so it winds up grit side out and spin it in the tube with a drill. It work real good.

Do others see what Toby posted above? I only see an Amazon 'a' in Firefox and absolutely nothing in Opera. Are others seeing something in his post?

Re: Pump tube
If one needs a gizmo to clean the inside of the tube, then find something round (pencil, dowel, or similar) that you can chuck in a drill. Get a strip, maybe 1.5" wide of a scotch bright style scrub pad and hot glue the strip end to the end of the dowel. Roll the strip on the end of the dowel until the roll will just fit in the pump, and cut off the rest. Now you have something to put in the pump tube to chuck in a drill and buff the inside of the pump tube. Sand paper could be added to this for more aggressive cleaning. That being said, i could have already cleaned the pump tube by hand in the time it took me to type this.

Re: Pump tube
I see the Flex Hone that Toby posted. That's the tool I use for rusty pump tubes. Works great.
Re: Pump tube
Thanks. I can somewhat understand not seeing certain things in Firefox due to running NoScript to automatically block all trackers and having to give explicit permission, but I've enabled nothing additional on Opera. I'm surprised I'm seeing nothing. I won't even consider using Chrome, so won't test that browser.
It may really help if folks state would state which browser they were using so I might know which avenue to pursue.

Yes Kelly that is the one I ordered. You could get by with a finer grit, but the 240 does just fine. I'm shocked at the price increase... Possibly a cheaper source available?

Re: Pump tube
This is what I use. The pump tube tends to be pitted from the rust, and a flat-stone type cylinder hone will have to remove metal from the tube until the surface is flush with the lowest pit. The Flex Hone is, well, flexible, so it just smooths everything out and removes much less metal. One of these will likely polish every rusted pump tube you encounter in a long life of fettling.
It's priceless until someone puts a price on it.

Where? Brush Research wants more than Azon direct from them. When I bought several of these a few years back--to hone pistol cylinders and some stuff around the brewery--BR was the cheapest at ~$18 each.

Amazon prime...I see the option is not there now...guess I got lucky with 1 left at that price? In any case, I shipped it to my US package storage place, and who knows when the border will reopen so I can pick it and tons of other GPA-related stuff up!Gunhippie wrote: ↑Wed Feb 10, 2021 6:32 pm

A pistol or a hand cannon?
Dan Wesson .357 Mag. I got what I thought was an incredible deal on the wheel gun, but it turned out that removing spent casings from the cylinder required beating on the ejection rod with a piece of fire wood. Two BR Flex Hones (400 and 600 grit) and a half-hour of honing and now the casings fall out with no help and are in fine shape for reloading! I've since used the brushes to fix the cylinders of a couple of friend's 38 cal wheel guns. It seems that these cylinders were used across several different makes of pistols, and the machining was crude to say the least.

Re: Pump tube
I just got the 7/8 flex-hone to use on rusty pump tube. It looks a bit big - do i need to kind of cram it in there? Or did i get one size too big?

I didn't read the description from Azon.

Re: Pump tube
I was just wondering here, if the pump tube was made of brass, what's the rusting there all about?

If it's rusting, it ain't brass!
