220E restored?
I'm going to upload a lot of pics, and try to explain. I've had this 220E for about 25 years, and never touched it, except for wiping the lantern off with a cloth.. When I got it as a gift from a buddy, I always thought someone restored it, so I just put it on the shelf. (I'm not really into restos all that much) Since relocating to Arizona, I thought I'd give you all a chance to determine if it has been restored or not. The fount paint looks satin, and there is not even a scratch around the collar. You can see the bail scratch is not correctly clocked to where the bail is now.
The glass is just too clean to be original to the lantern
So what do you think? Thanks guys, for taking the time.
The bottom has runs in the paint and looks almost new.
The bail is now clocked in a different position. Can you see the chips under the paint that didn't get sanded out?
The green Sunrise Pyrex globe looks pristeen, like it's never been used. Hmmmm...
The decal is a water slide but the paint is satin, isn't it?
I think this is an older restoration or an attempt at one.The glass is just too clean to be original to the lantern
So what do you think? Thanks guys, for taking the time.

Looks all original to me other than the burner clocking. Very nice E

Clocking is off on the cleaning lever. Should be one bar to the left of the valve wheel.
The black pump knob shows that no one got carried away in cleaning. Most folks don't know these were originally black and clean them down to bare brass.
Fuel cap is wrong. It should be a green 3-piece. That was common when someone took a lantern into a Service Center for a leaking cap gasket--just toss the 3-piece and slap that single on.
If you can't feel an edge around the decal where someone masked it, I'm going for original paint. The runs on the bottom are consistent with Coleman paint job. If the burner cage and burner were clocked properly, the bail scratches would be where the bail hits.

It's priceless until someone puts a price on it.

Re: 220E restored?
Looks like some scratches in the fount that were painted over, no?
But a really tidy repaint if it was. My 2 cents.

Re: 220E restored?
I'd say original with a few acceptable tweaks.

Re: 220E restored?
Original. Coleman paint was a utility paint, not always glossy or even good. That's consistent with a lantern that was used on a few camping trips, needed service (probably due to being stored with pump gas) and was never left to the elements.

Re: 220E restored?
I had an 11/55 220E that had the same satin finish paint on it. Waterslide decal gave it away as all original, also had the sunrise globe, very clean.

Re: 220E restored?
I thought it was original paint until I saw the painted over paint chips up close. You would definitely see some sort of paint line around the decal if it was a repaint. A partial paint job would show.
Pull off the pump cap and look at the very end of the pump tube. Sometimes that’ll give you a clue.

I have a 3 of 53 220 in the same condition as yours. I call it an original survivor and yours is a nice looking one too I might add. Even though I don't personally care for the 220s i still appreciate the nice looking ones.

Re: 220E restored?
Might be a stretch, but what do you suppose the fount was repainted while still at the factory?
Could have been dinged then painted again as it originally made its journey through the assembly lines.

Re: 220E restored?
I have a 2 of 56 228E. It is very similar in cosmetics and appearance as your 220E. Has the water slide decal and original pump and the paint sheen on the fount looks like a satin finish whereas the vent is more glossy.
As Austin said;
I'd say it's all original except for the fuel cap. If the globe isn't the original that came with the lantern I believe the one you have on it now is at least period correct for it. Maybe it's possible a previous owner had it in the shop for service as Timm mentioned and at that time for some reason or another, maybe while replacing the fuel cap they needed to service the internals and off set the clocking.
As Austin said;
And as Timm points out; "The clocking is off on the cleaning lever ...., the black pump knob didn't get carried away ...., and wrong fuel cap ...."

Re: 220E restored?
See? I just knew you guys would help me with the valuable info I needed on this!! I'm definitely saving this thread to fix the issues with this lantern. Thank you all very much for the knowledge. Coming here was the right choice. My wife is wrong, I CAN make a good decision. Thanks again.
Not looking for anything. I have too much already, my wife says.

Re: 220E restored?
It certainly look every bit as original as it can be. You might never know about Coleman: even the single piece fuel cap can be originally wrong from the factory.
Can you find anything on it that had been nickel-plated?

Re: 220E restored?
Sorry it took so long for a response. Nope, no Nickel that I can tell. But look at the cap on this.
I took the fuel cap off of this 220E for the first time and this is what I found. I suppose if we want it to be an original from 1955, I suppose it could be. However, as an incurable skeptic I'm suspicious of most of what I see. I'm probably beating a dead horse, but you can probably guess how dull my life is if I'm discussing a 220E. This cap really looks repainted to me. Now, the cap isn't an original to this lantern, agreed, but it does look to be repainted

Re: 220E restored?
Nope, that's consistent with an original paint job too. You're right about it being a replacement, but that's because one piece caps didn't appear until 1970.

Really glad you guys know about this stuff, not that I'd sell it, or anything else, (of course). I'm not a businessman at all. I usually buy at the high end, and then keep everything, then family members give it all to Goodwill.
