500 Stove Temp...
Curious if anyone have taken a temp reading on a 500 stove running at full power? Just wondering how hot that flame gets...Thanks, Joe.
Re: 500 Stove Temp...
To be explicit, are you looking for a flame temperature? Or how hot the fount gets after the 500 has been running an extended length of time?

Re: 500 Stove Temp...
Just wondering how hot it could get in the flame when it was up to operating temperature? Thanks
Re: 500 Stove Temp...
Blue flames usually appear at a temperature between 2,600º F and 3,000º F.

Re: 500 Stove Temp...
So what is the BTU rating on a 502 ?
Re: 500 Stove Temp...
I've read Coleman literature on the ICCC that puts the 500 and the 502 both at 7500BTU.

Thanks for the replies
Re: 500 Stove Temp...
The 502 is 4500 BTU.
Edit: Mike, I'd like to know what literature from Coleman shows the 502 with the same output as a 500, or even showing more than 4500 BTU.

Re: 500 Stove Temp...
Of all the single burners I own, none of them will out perform the early peak 400s. Pound for pound Coleman's best single burners in my opinion... Label on the stove says 8500 btuh for what that's worth...

How high should the flame be on a 500 Speed Master running at full? Should the flame be higher than the grill? Thanks..Joe.
Re: 500 Stove Temp...
I would think so. First image is wide open I believe. Second turned down to half maybe.basenjib123 wrote: ↑Sat Feb 20, 2021 10:40 pm How high should the flame be on a 500 Speed Master running at full? Should the flame be higher than the grill? Thanks..Joe.

One caution to keep a pot or pan on the 500 so the grate won't warp. Of course a few minutes of 'open' flame won't hurt it.

Re: 500 Stove Temp...
OK thanks, the flame on my 500 is definitely not that high probably only about even with the top of the grate? The stove runs very well and I get a nice blue flame, any thoughts on what it could be? Thanks

Are you running it indoors to avoid even the slightest breeze, and with a pan on the grate? My 500's run very well, but don't have flames touching the grate, but I only used mine outdoors.

Re: 500 Stove Temp...
I could be wrong, but Toby's pic looks like it was taken indoors. Certainly there's no trace on wind blowing on it. Yours being a daylight pic compared to Toby's darkness pic isn't a good comparison. I've found and a few others have too, the best performance from a 500 is starting with very low pressure, run it until the gen is good and heated up, then and only then pump it up as much as you want. Of course, this assumes you're running with plenty of fuel, and using the starting lever appropriately.

Its only about 1/4 full right now ... can that make the flame lower? Sorry, but I'm rather new to these stoves..thanks, joe.JimL wrote: ↑Sun Feb 21, 2021 3:58 am I could be wrong, but Toby's pic looks like it was taken indoors. Re: 500 Stove Temp...
I don't know if you tore into it to clean the F/A tube, but that shouldn't really make a difference if it's lighting ok. I was just suggesting to try with more fuel, but only if it's really not running right.
A couple of us have noticed that with too much pressure at start, the flame won't be good and will tend to push away from the burner. Once warmed up, you can pump it up all you want.
Personally, I'm not seeing an issue with yours, but don't know if your running it under the same conditions as Toby's.

Re: 500 Stove Temp...
Like Jim mentioned these are very susceptible to wind. My photos are in a perfect indoor environment. I'd shut your lights out and let it rip to see how your flame looks. A good blue flame is hard to see in the daylight.

Re: 500 Stove Temp...
My 500's typically only have flame at the grate or slightly above so if you can get that far, you're doing well.
Whenever I have a 500 that is burning lower than 'normal' I pull the gen and clean the coils with a butane torch and/or small wire brush. It usually clears them up and perks the flame up a bit.

This is one of mine on the first fire up after cleaning it. Flame was definitely above the grill.

Mine runs great, but the flames seem to just barely exceed the height of the grate:

500A seems just a bit more:

Re: 500 Stove Temp...
If the burner rings are tightened too much...compressing too much...could this cause the low flame?
BTW. I have several 500s and 4 spare (NOS) generators. From the tip reference document the tip should be stamped BX. None of mine have the BX...there is nothing stamped. They are all Canadian gens.

Make sure the needle assembly inside the generator is completely screwed into the valve assembly. Believe I had the same problem with my 500.

Eric makes a good point - the 500 pricker needs to be threaded all the way in or it may cut down the flow out the orifice.

Re: 500 Stove Temp...
Jim, just saw this today and went in search of. I spent the last hour digging through my Coleman papers and flyers as well as the ICCC looking and have not found any reference to either stove's BTUs. I know I didn't dream it so maybe I've just lost my mind.

I will continue, off and on, in search of but for now I post my apologies to you and the forum for stating something I cannot readily substantiate.

Mike,
The image below is what I'm basing the 4500 BTU of the 502 on. I got that image from a member here several years ago. Although the burner ring diameters are the same between the 502 and 500, the tip orifices are significantly different between the two. On the 502, it's .009" and on the 500, it's .013", which allows a lot more flow.

Good info Chuck, i never thought much about seeing all the twisted grates on 500’s.......ive noticed in pics that the round grates on the 500A’s must be really prone to warping compared to the 500’s shape grate

Re: 500 Stove Temp...
Yes, they could be more prone due to different metallurgy, the forge process, or maybe more 500a's were used with heat drums?
