User vents for 427/327 220B?

#1

Post by Donnellym »

As of late I’ve collected a few 427’s. I really enjoy using them however I don’t enjoy polishing the plated vents afterwards.

I took a rattier 220D vent and cut it down to look like the older 220B vents to be my user and it has worked well so far but I would like a few more and all lantern prices seem to be going higher.
I have a couple spare later model vents from H,J models and I was wondering if anyone ever cut the brim off one of those as a user?
Thanks for your input, Mark

I've always cut down beat up E vents... I've even got one that's white underneath from a 228 😉

Disregard everything but the vents in the photo...

They look so clean. I don’t know how it seems there’s enamel all around.
My friends don’t call me “Lantern/lampie Levi” for nothin’,if they did call me that.

Just the very bottom will be raw steel if done correctly.

ive cut down one like toby does but i used my dewalt cordless grinder and a thin cut off disk. used masking tape to be a guide and help protect it. If you cut down an H or J you would probably need to change the vent stud on the 427 so a short stud. That is if you want to use the nut to hold it down while you run it.

Toby, glad to see that I'm not the only person that uses a forklift and pallet for a work bench.

I'm lazy so, I've given up polishing anything unless it is easy. I might polish something once if it is kinda shiny to start with otherwise I just get the crud off and keep it dusted and don't care if it gets discolored by heat. It would have done the same thing when it was new so why bother re-polishing?

Shaune our benches end up being catch-alls, the forklift gets used often enough it stays easily accessable 😉

Well I tried a sacrificial poor condition vent off a J model. The diameter above the lip was big enough around however, the vent is not deep enough to sit down on the frame. It just sits on top of the mixing chamber. I guess I’ll be looking for another E or earlier to cut down.

Youll find one. sometimes just a vent shows up on ebay but I usually just buy all the crusty cheap lanterns I find just for parts. Ill look in the barn but I dont think I have anymore tall vents. Im sure someone has one laying around. Might post a wanted to buy in the classifieds too.
