Sears Fount - what do I have?

#1

Post by iceiceguy »

I have a B-Day Sears fount. It has been repainted Coleman green and I'm hoping to restore it to its original Sears glory. The fount is dated 4-68 and from a size/shape point of view, I would say it is comparable to a 220/228 size fount. It is bigger than a 200 fount but is shaped like a 220 size fount. My guess is that this would be a single mantle sears fount? Seems like the Sears double mantle lanterns used a more pancake shaped fount? Thanks for any info you can share.

My guess from your description. What threads in the valve bung?

Thank you Toby. Right now it is a Sears fount painted green on the bottom and a 200A from the waist up. Has a 200A valve assembly, frame and vent. Frankenlantern.

They basically are just a 200A above the fount. Collar of course is stamped differently, valve knob a different shape, and vent is tall and black. Burner frames are identical. Sounds like a cool piece anyhow 👍

Yeah, right now it looks like a jumbo Christmas lantern with the big fount and red vent. It burns as it is but not as nice to look at as a Sears single!

It's a birthday lantern. Make it your own 😁

Both the Sears single and the 220 are 6 inches in diameter, and they appear to be the same height. But the pump tube on the Sears exits the fount on its shoulder whereas on the 220, the pump tube exits the fount lower, almost below the shoulder.
Edit - I just looked at another 220 fount sitting on my desk, and its pump tube exits the fount on the shoulder, just like the Sears. I never noticed that difference in 220/228 founts before.

I've never noticed that either but leave it to Coleman to give us some variations! This fount is stamped with the "Sears" stamp on the bottom so I know it is a Sears fount for sure. Just wasn't sure if it was a single or not. Thanks for all the insights!

The Sears Double mantle Fount is basically a 500A fount...
