Can someone give some insite on accessory safes

#1

Post by Kd8kpt »

Hello,. I have a newer coleman duel fuel lantern that is my main user right now. I really like the idea of the accessory safe. Does anyone know if the the old lantern safes will fit on my newer lantern?

Yes. 220 safes fit 295. They are sweet if you don’t leave them on always. They make the bottom of the lantern rust.
My friends don’t call me “Lantern/lampie Levi” for nothin’,if they did call me that.

Also, I have a couple of safes on shelf-queens but I don't close the clamp on them. By virtue of being shelf-queens they do reside in the house so moisture is kept to a minimum.

No rusting issues in 4 years or so.

Is it a 285 or a 295? I can test a 285 here in a little bit with a 200A safe.

So a 200A safe does fit a 285. FYI it also fits a 502!!

Thanks Jason! I never would have thought to check against a 502. Glad you were able to finally pick one up for yourself. They're awesome stoves! :)

If you’re insecure about your 502 addiction, you can give me as many as it takes for you to only have 25. I’m here for you... 🙂

Hey! I have one! Not gonna say I particularly like it, but all the stoves I have suck. The 425nl. Literally the worst coleman product I’ve ever seen. The 502. It’s much better, but I don’t have anything to use it for. My parents think I don’t need coffee. Ppff. What else does a guy use a 502 for? Oh, I used it as a hand warmer this past winter!

I'm happy with the six I have. I've found that my 502's and the Svea 123's compete. If I find a 502, then another Svea 123 shows up and vice-versa. They feel the need to keep in balance.

Levi,

Do more cooking and I think you'll develop more of an appreciation for the 502. It's not super powerful, but if you need a low flame, such as for simmering or slow cooking, the 502 is the best. When making percolated coffee, I use a 'Born to Boil' M-1950 because it heats up the water so fast, and then switch to the 502 for the percolating.

Sounds like a pain. The 502 is just a bit too small it seems fer cookin. That’s what it looks like at least. I’m not a great cook. What for a a guy make on a 502 that you simmer? The 425 is miles more adjustable than the 502.

There so cool you don’t have to use them for their intended purpose. Here’s a project I need to get back on. Painting them and some 200As to match some vents I have.

Just so I don’t totally high jack the thread I’m including a pic with a parts safe on a 502. That way it’s relevant lol

Your 502 isn't running properly and needs work.

Well, you also have to factor in that subjective performance ratings may be influenced by different or unrealistic expectations, what ever the reason for that might be.

I have some, but avoid using them. They scratch the paint and are not fluid tight - even with the gasket.

I've stored mantles under the below folding reflector, but too close to hold much else.

Agree with Bruce. If you have a minty fount, may not want to install a safe, the paint will never be the same. The latter made black plastic safes (220B710) however do no harm. A standard 6'' plastic coffee can lid will fit almost all 220/228 founts, and hold a spare generator or wrench & mantle. They also protect those minty founts from everyday damage.
They are all not the same dimensions, & some fit better then others, they are also free.

Levi, I have to wonder about your 425 stove. I've seen you mention this before. If it functions properly, it should be a great stove. There's a reason most 425's have scorched cases - they are powerful little stoves! Is yours somehow defective? Is it in need of a generator/airway cleanup?

I only use them on my user camping lanterns. it's not going to hurt the fount on those any at all. they do not ever go on nice ones or anything with nickel.
