Nothing written down that I know of. The CL1 (286) was the replacement for the 200. The CL2 (288) was a two mantle version of the CL1. Still a two mantle lantern, but more compact then the larger CLX. The CLX (290) was the replacement for the 220. These were in the early 80's. After some time, the CL was removed and Coleman just went by the model number, 286, 288, 290. Then they also came out with the same style lanterns but marketed as Duel Fuel.

I've got 3 288s and they are all slightly different.... So I've started putting together info on the different versions and i did not want to repeat something already done. I've got 3 288s and they are all slightly different....

Do a search here on the site then. There are all kinds of posts about them. I thought you were looking for something official! I have seen three different CL 2 decals. One with the tree, one without, and then a silver/black decal. Then after the CL was dropped, there was the decal that said adjustable two mantles, then just the Coleman logo with a small 288 at the bottom. There is also a Japan version.

I have a 6/'85 and a 12/'85. Quite a while ago, I posted a little contest to see who could identify all the differences between them from the photos in the post. The thread was maybe lost in the transfer to a new provider, at least, I can't find it now. Here's a photo of them. I forget for sure which is the earlier one, but I think it's the one on the left. I could check tomorrow unless you already know which is which.

Yea, the one on the left is the earlier of the two.

There's also another variant; it has no pointer on the valve wheel but includes a gold dot.

Thanks. and i agree with Pancho that the one on the left is earlier - it is missing the heat shield.

And thanks also for the variant with the gold dot. I have not noticed that.

I would expect that many of the design changes in the 290 were incorporated in the 286 and 288.

*composite eccentric block replaced with pot metal eccentric block and heat shield
*frame replaced with clips riveted into base and bail attached to ventilator
*different colors such as red
*CL1 label replaced with adjustable label
*clips and heat shield replaced with one piece heat shield with spring feet (I am assuming this change occurred.)
*pump design change
These are what I can remember off-hand.

@bluepen61 John, from what I've seen you are correct - however, I've never seen a factory red 290. If you have, school me on it. I have black and green 290's but nothing more.

In my list are these two reds. I wish I had a red 290. Jerry had one in his garage and I drooled over it during the two times I visited him.

Thanks! That is a lot of info!! I might have the same for the 288 series. ANd it looks like the 288 and 290 features changed around the same times. I will try to find time to match them up.

I've noted a few dates that aren't on that 290 list, and there are a couple of dates on that list that weren't on mine. I've also seen (and kept photos of) a Japanese Limited Edition 290 in red dated 2/00.

The basic 288 history goes something like this:

1/83 - 12/85: CL2 - The last two months have a "transition decal" (see post #5 and below*), all have a frame.
12/85 - 1/91: 288A Adjustable with high-dome vent, metal pump cap, no frame
5/91 - 12/95: 288A Adjustable with low-dome vent, plastic pump (except for 5/91)
8/88 - 2005: 288A Adjustable with no "Adjustable" on the decal
2006 - 2009 or so: 288B "Classic" 2 mantle lantern

Still working on the 288 list. And I parsed the 290 list that John posted and sorted it by month/year. I think the Model #s might not all be correct since the relationship betwen 290, 290-701, and 290A700, and 290A700T do not follow any data logic. I need to look into this more

288 list coming... soonish..

And i putting in all in an Excel file - i anyone needs a copy just pM me
