J.C. Higgins Generator Question

#1

Post by holliswood »

I’ve got a J.C. Higgins model 710-74571 (two mantle) lantern that I believe the generator tip is enlarged on.

Here’s the question, will the generator for a Thermos two mantle lantern work on the Higgins lantern? I’ve got a NOS generator that’s branded Thermos but I wanted to check here first before attempting a generator change.

I think it's the same lantern, just made in a different color and with a different sticker for Sears.

Tip will be +/- .001" so if it fits it'll work.

Thank you for the lead on a spare! If the NOS generator fixes the issue, I’ll reach out to him so I’ll have another spare handy the next time 👍🏻

Thank you and I’ll get to installing it later tonight.
I’m going to try some Peerless 24-A’s on it while I’ve got the burner cage off.
After replacing the O-Ring near the pip in the bottom of the tube, that didn’t fix the leak. So now I get to drive the plug out. Can’t wait to do that lol! If I’m remembering correctly, it’ll be the third one I’ve had to do that. Even with all of that, I still enjoy them 👍🏻

I think they're an interesting design... but I like Akron stuff too. I still remember straightening out that "dent" in the collar on the first one I got.

Akron’s are really cool! I’ve got a couple of them and a lamp.

On the collars, I got lucky and found this place before doing that myself 😆
It was mighty tempting though.

I remember reading a thread on the forum a couple of years ago and I believe letting them soak in denatured alcohol for a while helped clean them up. It’s worked with other generators of this type for me. The wadding inside has asbestos if I’m remembering correctly.

Thank you! It’s not perfect but it cleaned up decent. I’ll add some pictures. It was in need of some love when my son and I left Hartford last weekend. It’s going to be a good user lantern for sure.

Pictures didn’t load as I wanted. They’re loaded at least 🤣

OK, good. I figured you probably saw the posts on the issues with these pumps, but I'd rather err on the side of caution.

I’m thankful you put in the time and effort to help people with that issue 👍🏻
At least you know one person on here is remembering your advice👍🏻👍🏻
That pump fought me all the way though. Thankfully I’ve done a couple before this one.
Hopefully the next one in line behaves but I’m not holding my breath lol!!

Thanks. I want us all to be safe while we play. :) It's really too bad Thermos designed such a pump for a really cool looking lantern. I've got two singles, but only one is currently working. The second has a leak in the fount seam. I *might* try POR since I have some and the fount isn't rusted. It has "Special Services" engraved on the vent. I thought this was probably done by some kid playing around, but since found out that the military had a group with that name and their purpose was to loan stuff out to soldiers, such as camping gear.

That sounds like a awesome lantern Jim! From the two singles I have, to me it seems like they don’t require to much pressure to run and that’d be worth a shot to seal it. At least you won’t have to worry about getting the sealant on the end of the pump tube if yours is the filler cap/pump combo variety.
It’s your lantern and I respect your decision either way 👍🏻

Hi Fred.
Nice fettle and good to see it lit again.
Did you have problems with your pump or does it work just fine?
Happy lighting, Erwin.

P.S.: Just re-read your postings and learned you'd replaced all o-rings.
Does it hold pressure safely now without fuel leaking back into the pump shaft?

Thank you Erwin!
I had the usual troubles with these types of pumps. I had to replace all four of the O-Rings.
After I drove the plug out, and then put the plug back in, I used a adjustable radiator clamp to help snug the tube back towards the plug. After tightening the clamp several times at different spots, it secured it in there nicely. I’m hoping to find something that works better than a radiator clamp eventually.

I won't trust these pumps. If or when I get it going, I'll likely just share my Schrader cap from the first one with it.

Glad you figured out how to rebuild those pumps. I have a 50/50 track record. So i now have two other methods. One mentioned by JIm - easy to do thread in a schrader valve. The other is to install a Primus stove NRV. The later works great - but it does shorten the throw a little bit - and the pump handle sticks out a little bit.

Thank you for the information Kevin! I’ve got a spare NRV and have actually used one on a pump tube for a Thermos stove I have. They do work exceptionally well 👍🏻
Before I install another one in the future, I’m going to find a tap&die to make the process easier.

It takes an M8 x 0.75 tap. You wont need the die. I got one from amazon for about 8 bucks.
