Is a 242b fount interchangeable with a 249 fount?

#1

Post by Coast_to_Coast »

Just wondering if a Canadian 242b fount and a Canadian 249 fount are interchangeable?
Thanks!

Yes. All the 24x models have the same fount
My friends don’t call me “Lantern/lampie Levi” for nothin’,if they did call me that.
Looking for bday lanterns 8/38, 8/41,
10/25, and 8/07

I wondered. I’ve never taken a 249 apart, but eyeballing the two side by side the threads looked wider on the 249. I used a caliper and then was certain. I was just wondering, because I have a Canadian 249 dated 1962. Looking at the book, it appears that the 249 ended production in 1959. Thought it might be a Frankie made from a 242b.

The Canadian 249 fount has a larger bung size than a CA 242B, as the 249 valve is larger than the 242 model so as to accommodate the large 249 generator.
I think the 249 has a 1/2 x 32 tapered thread and the 242B is 1/8 NPT.
Here is a pic of the two different valves, 249 on the right.

The CA 249 was actually made up to early 1966, then the 249D and E models were made until 1970.

Canadian 249E went into early 70's. Not sure on the last date of manufacture though.

True. But this one is not marked 249d or E, and the D did not go into production until 1966. According to the book anyway.

You can, however, use a 249 valve in a 220 fount. Requires a custom collar though. The 249 has it's bung level with the top of the fount and on the 220 it sticks up a half inch or so, making it had to find a stock collar.

This is a US example. Apologies if it doesn't apply.

I remember that thread. Did you end up building a lantern with it?

Oooh I saw that one too I think. Look kinda rough but could have been re-plated or made to work?
