4/52 Black band 200A

This is my dad's 200a we pulled out of his barn.

I don't have much experience but I have done 2 other 200a's before this one so I recognize some differences from this one.

Here it is taken apart, I have some carb cleaner in the pump where the old leather cup had stuck to the end. Decal is peeling off and very crunchy, I try not to touch it. Not going to do much to the collar and the frame other than clean up a bit. I don't want the black paint to peel off but am worried about the rust. Any suggestions??

it was missing the pal nut and someone had stuck just a regular nut on it.
No separate venturi?

Also couldn't get the spring out of the generator and tried to force it. Is this the type with the basket in the end that ruins prickers? (pic was after partially cleaning it) spoilers: I ruined it. But I have another generator on hand I can use I think.

The pricker wire broker off off and also can’t get the spring out. Maybe broke is a better word? I think I read you can make a new wire but if I can’t get it back in… same result?

Well, don't throw anything away. A couple of heat/quench cycles with the generator tube might loosen up the coil for removal. I'm looking at a way to maybe braze or solder a new pricker wire on the pricker rod.

Look what I got running last night! I did put a new generator in it and it's working great, very bright!
Image354A6457-ABF9-4DB6-A233-8843D8E82332

Then I was so excited I had to get all three 200a's out and light them up.
The black band '52 is in the front. The '64 is on the left? and the one on the right? I think is a '74. -I think I had shared the other two already?

“it was missing the pal nut and someone had stuck just a regular nut on it.”

A “regular “ nut would be correct for this one.

Nice trio Amy! A 200A is what got me into this mess... Now I'm tripping over GPA and related paraphernalia 😳😁

Thank you. My mom told me I should sell it and I said no I can't sell it. She said 'why not"? And my dad answered "Because it's a collectible". But really I can't sell it because it belonged to my dad. He wouldn't care if I did sell it, he is happy that I am enjoying them. This weekend I am going to try to get that photo of him with some of his lanterns.

I've got a lantern that belonged to my Dad. Every time I light I think he smiles.

If my memory fails me right, I have used a drywall screw to pick springs out of generators. Maybe that was a good dream...I don’t know.
Just a cheap “tool” you likely have.

"But really I can't sell it because it belonged to my dad."

Lanterns with "history" can be very valuable. Look at the $1,000+ limited editions lanterns on ebay and similar and then ask yourself if you would trade your dad's lantern for the limited edition lantern.

A black band was the very first lantern I ever bought. Got me started too. At the point of drastic thinning of my lanterns, lamps and stoves. Trying to get down to 5 of my faves. difficult.

Nice recovery on those!
+1 on using a drywall screw to snag the spring out of the generator. Also, some generators had a little mesh screen jammed in the end of the tube, which will kill the pricker wire about every time. Use a BBQ skewer to poke it out after you get the spring out if one is in there. I use the red straw from WD-40 or similar to lead the pricker back in, protecting the wire inside the end of the straw. Add the tip last.
Prickers can be made using 1/16" brass rod from most any hardware store and some .005 wire. There were several old threads on how to make one either peening the tip or using a chuck to pinch the wire in.
If you're lucky, sometimes you can carefully file around the tip and see the end of the broken wire. With some good tweezers or pliers, you can sometimes pull a bit more wire out.
However, just getting a new generator is a simple fix. Also, buying cheap junk lanterns with useful parts can build up your parts inventory, including extra prickers!
