Pump Cup - inside out or outside in

#1

Post by Phredd »

I think this has been discussed in the past, but i could not find the thread...

I've bought new leather pump cups from a couple different sources in the past. And some come with skin side out (the side that faces the pump tube) and some come the the rough flesh side out. Seems to me that the former should be better since the flesh side is always rough and bits and pieces can come off easier.

What says the CCF collective wisdom?

If easy enough to fold it to choose, I'd go with the smooth side out. I'm basing this on occasionally seeing what appear to be leather bits at the bottom of the pump tube and believe this is the cause of some check valves getting stuck.

Original and current production Coleman leather cups are rough side out to the pump tube.
My experience with smooth side out pump cups is not good.
Rough side soaks up oil better than smooth.
Some repro pump cups are bad in that neither side takes up oil even after 10 days soaking.

Thank you!

Good question, I've always wondered why most (not all) are rough side out. Personally I have made em both ways and both work.

Don't seem to matter. Ever NOS Colemans seem to go either way.

Now, leather boots? Smooth out. Rough out gathers too much dust and sand and wears much faster. But I won't be taking any of my pump cups for a run in the mountains.

So looks like the wisdom of the crowd is you can do it however you want. Freedom for leather cup users!

There are smooth pump cups out there that don’t work well until turned inside out.
It may be more an issue with how they got them to maintain shape. The smooth side doesn’t suck up oil even over night. They are awful hard right out of the gate.

Thank you!

Rough side out for me, that’s what I buy and that’s what I make when I’m making them

What Kevin said.

I make my own mostly and the smooth side out is not what you want.
