Christmas lantern's collar

#1

Post by TwoCanoes »

I'm working on a 6/'51 Christmas lantern, and would like to know whether the collar is correct. In the first photo, the Christmas lantern is on the left and a 4/'52 black band is on the right (a previous owner stripped the paint on the bb fount). The bb collar has the little tab that, when the lantern is assembled, is situated below the opening of the air tube. The Christmas lantern's collar lacks this tab. This is the first 200A I've seen that lacks this tab. Is it the correct collar? Thanks.

I don't think that's a 200A. It should be a 200. No tab below the air tube is a good sign.
It's priceless until someone puts a price on it.

the tab (air tube bug cover) appeared in 11-51. Some 200A's had it that month but not all. The OCD 200 had it. The 12-51 Christmas/blackband 200A's had it.

The collar says 200A, it has a steel fount and the date stamping is in the 200A format. So, did the earlier 200 not have the tab?

Thanks for the information, Dan. So this 200A appears to be essentially original (minus the globe), and was produced in the first month of the decades-long 200A production run. I'm excited to get it running, just hoping there are no unpleasant surprises. It leaks at the valve bung (stripped threads?) and there is quite a bit of rust in the fount (please, no pinholes!).

Here's an 11/'50 200:

I wasn't aware that any 200A was tabless.

My last 200 is a 4-51, not counting the OCD lanterns which are both 11/51. I have the 8/51, 11/51 and 12/51 200A Christmas lanterns. So your 200A is a very early one. The decal didn't appear until 10/51 (+/-). Bug cap 11/51 (+/-) and black frames and collars 12/51 and I believe the very first Blackband was also a 12/51 although the earliest I've seen was a 2/52. Someone here has one and will confirm this.
I wish you luck on the fount, these were untreated steel and any amount of rust is usually bad news. Any leaks near the threaded bung that are not the threads themselves are likely condensation rust. But there's always a maybe. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.
