Elgin Kerosene lantern?

#1

Post by BryanWP »

Need some help identifying this kerosene lantern that belonged to my wife's dad.
He had a collection and this one went to my wife.
Orange in color. Elgin name stamped on the top portion of the fount.
Large star emblem on the bottom. I do not see any date stamp. Lever on the side raises the globe when you turn it downward to allow for lighting.?
Wick lever turns for raising/ lowering.
Can I get some help on the identity?
Thanks,
Bryan

I can't find the link between Embury and Elgin. Interesting lantern to research.

This No. 2 Air Pilot by Embry has the star mark underneath. It appears similar to the Elgin.

The Elgin is a nice lamp!

Sweet photo. They are set up to burn kerosene aren't they?

Bryan,

Yes, kerosene only, no naphtha. i.e No Coleman fuel, Crown fuel, or gasoline.

Flammable liquids, open flame, what could go wrong?

Embury stamped a lot of lanterns with stores' and re-sellers' names.

To add some more to the list:
Montgomery Wards 'Better Lantern'
Belknap Hardware / Blue Grass
MasterCraft
Gambles

I saw an unusual one a while back, but I can't remember the name now. I think it started with an 'S'.

Then, too, there are Embury lanterns stamped with city names, 'City of L.A.' being a more common one.

The águila was stamped from the same tooling used for Embury lamps. There’s a story behind that plastic filler cap, Later ones were metal

Yes, thank you, that's probably it - not as uncommon as I was thinking. I believe they are also stamped Norliegh Diamond on the 'front' side.
