Converting 200A to 201?

#1

Post by Huntaholic »

What do I need to do to convert a 200A to kerosene? Ive already got the 201 generators in hand and the preheat cups should be here tomorrow. What else do I need to do?

I always get them to run kero with the original generator and no mods to the pickup. I just pop a preheat cup on and send it.

Others will remove the fuel metering rod and plug the air inlets on the fuel pickup to make the pickup more like a kerosene pickup.

To each their own. I like keeping the instant lite function on 200a’s as I do have my favorites. When I have a program scheduled I fill the lantern with CF for instant lighting, with it having kero the rest of the time.

This first one is going to be a gift to a buddy of mine so I want it pretty standard, cut and dried. Ive already got an alcohol bottle to go with the lantern! lol. Soldering up the air pick up on the fule tube isnt a problem, but what do I need to do with the metering rod?
Ive even got a a 201 kerosene label!

You can buy a straight pick up tube from OCP but it’s t shouldn’t be necessary to run good. I bought a few but never used them. Just open the valve fully after the pre burn instead of 1/2 turn like a 200A.

I converted a 200A 700 to kerosene and decided to make it a total 201. OCP provided all of the 201 parts i.e. straight pickup, 201 burner tube, preheat cup, decal, and generator. The only part I couldn’t find was a 201 frame rest, so the conversion isn’t complete. I may convert it back to a 200A 700.
As others have posted all you really need to do is add a preheat cup and generator. Kerosene will feed through the 200’s pickup tube with no problem.
Thanks,
Dan

Richard, I’m sure you already know about the Amish mix. I use it, and so far with good results. 25/75 ...CF/kerosene
Thanks,
Dan

Im building this one for a very dear friend of mine. He found out I was into lanterns and GAVE me a 3-61 200A with the box it came in complete with green sunrise globe. No idea where he came up with it but in return, since he has never had a kerosene Coleman, I decided to build him one. One that one, I want it to run straight kero for the simplicity of it. I am going to build another one for myself though and for that one I will certainly play around and find out how it runs on the amish mix!

At the moment I have my Christmas lantern running straight kero with nothing more than a preheat cup. He'll like how it turns out for sure. I can't tell the difference between CF and Kero on the 200a's so far.

Mike may have told you but I reccomend the 300cp mantle from American Mantle. My fire survivor 200a has one on it, and they do awesome.

ITS ALIVE! I sent VG and Rusty a pic! I tied a 250cp mantle on it and it seems to be running well except for a check valve leaking back. I pulled and cleaned it during the rebuild but it looks like Im going to have to do it again.

Thanks Shane! LOL the paint can lid on my Coke is to keep the yellow jackets out if it! After I shut it down I pulled and swapped the check valve out with a new one I was keeping on hand and that took care of the leak.

On stubborn check valves I heat them dull red and quench them several times. That gets the gunk out!

What mantle did you use? My beloved midstate 325 mantle fell off my main 200a today and I'm looking for something to use instead. Hard to find those mantles and it had thorium.

So far, I’m having good luck running Peerless 2C-HG on my 200 conversion. I’m not sure what the coating is.
Thanks,
Dan

The local ACE has the course weave 220 size mantles... or they had them. I may have bought them all (2 packs) today. It's a good idea to keep an eye out though.
