#334 Metal Shades

Post by coleman54 »

Most here have probably seen advertising of the later “Green” enameled #334 steel shades, that were actually in two sizes : 10 1/2” fully white underside and
9 3/4” With and without the inside upper portion enameled.

Probably not many have had the opportunity to see the earliest “White” fully enameled #334 shade in advertising, if at all.

The shipping records of the era did not have shade ID numbers or any entry’s so no way to know for sure I know of, the White Coleman no.334 introduction above dated March 1921 and jobber advertising I’ve seen shows them available into 1924.
The green shades once very few in captivity like other Coleman items show up pretty regular now with so many more hunters out there looking mostly connected to internet and with social media.

Thx for the info.
I wonder why these unbreakable are so rare.
My guess is, even though they can’t be broken people didn’t buy them because they were opaque. Didn’t look pretty

Thank You for the nice comments, I have edited in another variation not shown before concerning the smaller version with upper inner enameling.

Pardon me, Larry, somehow I missed this fine post awhile back! Those are really interesting ads; never saw the one before with the hammer. Just the thought of a hammer crashing against even a chipped up 334 shade makes one cringe.

Very nice post, and now that I have a 334 and I looked it over and compared to your photos I have a question.
Between the upper and lower portion there appears to be a break, mine appears to have the same and I’m curious if that happened when they were spun as one piece or were these formed as two pieces and welded?

I will post a picture of what appears to be a tack weld covered in porcelain on the outside of my example! Unfortunately it is at work.

Thank you!

A story is that the inside upper enameled portion was not covered on the later version because of damage from chipping when removing and installing shade on the holder and could continue to cause inside enamel harm.

This shade is one that haunts me. Well, the one that got away is anyway. I found one on a perfect CQ, except for the light bulb holders wire tied to the burner tubes. The shade was near perfect too. It was 200 buck though, and between 2 kids in high school cheerleading and child support I couldn't swing it. I would stop and "check" on it as I squirreled away my pennies, and when I finally had enough, I went back. Of course it was gone, and I have thought of it every time I see one since! This was about 2012 or so, and still it's the only one I've seen. Maybe some day! Thanks for posting these for us to drool over. It was the early green one I am sure. Wish someone would reproduce these.

There are reproductions out there. One was offered for sale in the classifieds a while back. They aren’t cheap either.

As far as I know, those that Dan had made are the only reproductions. I’m pretty sure he only had two made. I’m probably wrong.
