check out my newest project . i dont know what im getting into . this is all foreign new territory for me . but im very excited about it . its incomplete with no uppers . missing the valve n shaft , smoke bell and ringed nut ...... but such a cool piece of coleman history i had to have it . never seen one available before that i can remember , or at least that i could afford .... il be eating top ramen for a few months now.........luckily for me Patty was taking a shower when the UPS truck dropped this off , looking for a place to hide it now :-) ..... OK any leads for parts or just any information will be apreciated . i think it used a #74 shade , so il be on the lookout for one of those too . i really need to find a job now . the air o lite is just there for a size comparison .

the R uses a much smaller smoke bell . look at this link it shows a superb looking complete lamp .

I picked up a really nice one Labor Day weekend. Has the Quick-Lite conversion though but it's still my oldest lamp!

I've got a pump w thread on the end, and one lamp that it fits. Scares me though, would be real easy to break those thread off.

What does the tip of the pump look like for one of these? I remember seeing a pump with a threaded end once and wondered what it went to. I have a blurry photo of the tip that I saved just to learn.

I got to thinking about it and I think I saw one once but didn't buy it because I didn't think it went to a GPA.[sFun_duh2]

ya , Tim that looks like it may be the right pump , i think there were several pumps that would work . my lamp actualy has the screw in end off a pump that came with it , but i think it would use a flexable rubber hose to the hand pump or maybe even a bicycle foot pump . i havent goten that far yet :-) were is that store ?

just showing my progeress to date . did a BB dance with denatured alcohol and after a bit it developed a pin hole thru the bottom , not huge i think caswell can fix that , but the pick up tube is still clogged . im not sure if i want to try citric inside or go get some of that " evap o rust " as it wont hurt the existing good metal , and see if i can clear it that way . 120 Lbs of air pressure from the top hasent cleared it yet . so i gave it a little hand polishing job yesterday and boy the nickel sure looks good .

the generator is clogged as well ......im a little perplexed as there is a second check valve on the bottom of the generator . not sure what its suposed to do or if its original to the lamp ? after Dwayne N Darcy get back to California there gona school me on the Model R reading lamp .. so im taking it slow , dont want to jack anything up . been looking for the missing parts but nothing so far , im very excited having it even if it doesnt work , YET :-)

not being able to test my R fuel cap yet , i tried to see if its posable to use any other coleman fuel cap . YES an air o lite lamp and and Arc all share the same threads as the Model R reading lamp , so all 3 of these caps are interchangeable .

Hi Steve,

I can't wait to see yours up and running soon. I know you'll eventually find the remaining parts. Mine also needed some pieces parts when I bought it and everything eventually came together. Biggest expense was the original shade, but I'm glad I grabbed it when I did. I'll also keep my eyes peeled for you.

Nice start Steve, I hope you come up with all the parts. I use a regular Coleman pump and just press it against the hole. Works fine.

Here is a breakdown of the burner. Yes, it takes a No. 74. shade. They are hard to find, but not impossible.



You should get fuel out the gen as soon as you apply pressure to the fount. I'm guessing you have some plugage.

An interesting fact about this burner setup is that the lamp turns off as soon as the valve is closed. That's because the valve is above the generator.

thank you VERY VERY much Roland , thats the best break down picture i have to date of the burner showing what im missing . i thought i was missing the brass restrictor but i see it inside the nickel tube here thankfully . so basicly i need the whole upper valve assembly and the hex piece right below it that ataches it to the air intake .

i havent tried to take the generator apart yet . there is what looks like a small check valve right at the bottom of it , it has a BB inside it . i think i see it on yours too . from the top i see a steel rod inside , surounded by woven packing . but its clogged up i cant blow anything thru it . you have any suggestions of whats best to soak it in , denatured alcohol is what im thinking of starting with ?

I didn't look at that detail very closely when I had it apart Steve. My impression was that it was a loop of wire to hold/insert the packing material. The end appears to be crimped so as to hold the wire and packing in place.

this is how i soak generators ,using a test tube ( actualy its a cigar tube ) in the vertical position it will usualy let air out the top as it fills with alcohol ... im not kidding about 5 minutes later after taking this pic and writing this , its still sending up a small stream of bubbles so i know its getting inside it .... ill give it a few days or so .

then i go on to part 2 were i use a very large syringe with a rubber hose on the end , put the end of the hose over the generator and try n force alcohol thru it backwards trying to flush the crap back out of it .... and hope it clears , im not fond of the try n burn n quench as it leaves all this ash n stuff inside only to constantly clog the tip when trying to use it .

OH , and there is defiantly a loose captive BB inside the end of this generator very much like a check valve have . it looks like it may pull out but i haven't pulled very hard on it yet . for the life of me i cant see how a CV would help there so it maybe something else i dont undertand its purpose or how it works ? just hoping the soaking will just clear things up so i don't have to take it apart and re pack it ... that would be part 3 :-) only if i have too .



i also find it interesting there is no grove to tie in your mantles , you just tie it up past the burner cap on the threaded tube portion ?

my burner caps are different from Rolands and have more of the Coleman flower looking hole instead of several small holes .

well , i got the check valve off the generator . its doesnt pull off , it unscrews . its round so i used a pair of J clip plyers to grab it and it turned off super easy . http://www.efinch.com/cagebuilding/jplier.jpg

i think in this picture you can clearly see its some sort of a check valve with a BB inside of it ? but the generator shell is clam'd up tighter than a GIANT clam , cant get squat to go thru it . but now i see packing at both ends with a steel rod thru the center of it from the top end . as rusty as the fount was inside im afraid this steel rod may have rusted inside the generator tube and that may be part of my problem there .....im in no hurry with it thou , one little thing at a time ... just getting that check valve off was good enough for today .... just letting it soak now .

Well I'll be a son of a ..... Thanks for sharing that Steve.

That gen tubing is pretty substantial. I bet you could wail on that rod and force the guts out. Clean the rod and bore, and replace the packing with new torch wick or the like. Keep us informed. Upon reflection I consider myself lucky as my gen passes fuel copiously. :-)

im just baffled by this check valves purpose ? its installed in a way that it appears to block pressure from going up to the generator witch is against all my reasoning [sCo_hmmthink]

its only been a couple of hours but curiosity always gets the better part of me , so i check on the generator . its starting to get a little bit of flow thru it with the syringe , not much yet but its starting to look hopefull (fingers crossed ) so its back in the test tube soaking . HeHeHe :-)

this is a great thread, I was with Roland when he bought his. Steve that genny is like my torch light, but no C/V. I soaked it in vinegar but was really plugged, clamped it in a vise and pulled the wire, it came an inch or 2 then the wire broke off, so I used a drill bit slightly smaller than the inside ID and drilled as far as I could, then turned it around, tapped it to move it along and drilled again till it all came out, cleaned everything up and made new packing

Pretty much nothing will cut through that bake on carbon I have soaked gen in carb cleaner for weeks and still hard as a rock. getting my generator apart from my 80 some year old kampkook was a job with out breaking anything I did it but I bent up the spring its all clean now and down at Deans for a new jet it was badly worn and a new spring and he is making copies for his business.

wasent making much progress , so i tried to drill the end that i didnt see a steel rod in . quickly hit the steel rod . its like a steel rod runs thru n thru wraped with packing . i got a long punch and with a few whacks out came the whole thing intact . the packing is rock hard and dirty black . i have a couple tiki torch wicks here , gona see if i can stuff a rod inside the tiki wick and re insert it .

im sure the overnight soak in alcohol softened things up enough is why it came out intact . came out pretty .

well this isnt going as easy as a had thought ,


with the rod inside the new packing after i wire wraped it it was just too wide to get instaled , so i removed the rod and re wraped it with thin stainless steel wire to compress it and make it smaller , well that didnt work either the wires kept hanging things up , so then i only wrapped about one inch worth and pushed the remainder of the wire thru the generator so i could pull instead of push and then things started to work , i got it all the way inside and thought i was home free ? NOT or i dont think so anyways , its packed so tight i can hardly blow thru it , i mean just bearly can i blow thru it . fuel may flow easier i dont know . but i think im back to the drawing board and calling it a day for now .

i think i need a new wick and try n make it thinner somehow ? [sCo_hmmthink]

I think the check valve on the bottom may be to prevent a massive exodus of fuel in the case of a catastrophic valve failure. IE a running lamp has a slow flow rate, but pull the valve shaft out and, well you know...

Steve, I used some thin gas welding rod, fairly stiff, made a loop on 1 end, took some string mop, cut about 9 inches, pinched one end in the wire rod, squished it so it was held in place, then kind of spiraled the mop string tight on the wire, just a little loose fit, then inserted it, trimmed off the extra wire. I am sure it unraveled a bit once inside cause it didn't fall out. Lamp sure burns well now. YEA I should have taken a picture

here is something i did for it today . i see a lot of the model R's without this Valve wheel at the end of this shaft . ( it holds the burner assembly to the generator ) so i had gathered a few wheels and was trying to figure how to get one off and switch it to this R shaft .......... then it just came to me , the part sure looks familiar to a air o lite or quick lite lantern shaft with the fiber wheel . i just so happened to have a steel shafted valve wheel same as the model R shaft was ..... i had to shorten the shaft a bit so i got more turns of thread in the receiving end , and the replacement has a safety pin hole thru it , but you cant really see that anyway . i think its a nice addition being able to see a wheel on this lamp for the first time for me . i think its an improvement . and of coarse il keep the original shaft marked in a baggie as to what it is in case i someday figure out how to swap wheels ? they look like in the right hands they can be pressed insert n all on and off the shaft with the right tools . i dont think i have any tools like that here . and i noticed the brass wheel insert is on the opposite side on the quick lite shaft .... something for me to look further into , as this is all virgin territory for me here .

i think the original wheel was also just a bit smaller .

just sharing my progress and ideas here .

Great news Steve. It's a miracle you found a valve.

A regular Coleman pump will work just fine, that's all I've ever used. The valve retainer screw wheel diameter is 3/4" on the one's I have seen.

here is a quick teaser pic , one is complete n holding pressure for over 3 days now . i havent fired it up as i keep needing to take measurements from it to complete the second one .....the second one is mostly there , i have a lead on different shade holder and i need to make new air n burner tubes (tap n die are in the mail for those ) the hard part is its missing its gas tip . but i think we can over come that issue too .. my gears have been really working to get this far ......
