How long will a cracked globe last? At least two trips...

#1

Post by Coldwaterpaddler »

I just got back from a 1700+ mile trip out to the Bonneville Salt Flats which included several hundred miles of dirt roads and a fair percentage of that was washboard. Did some moderate four-wheeling over rocks and steep terrain (low range required). In addition to a 425C stove and a 502 stove, I brought a 222A lantern with me. Last fall, I cracked the globe while holding it in my hand and washing with soap and water. The soap can make it feel slick and so I think that I squeezed it a little too much and cracked it. Anyway, I used it last fall on a similar trip and the washboard dirt roads on that trip didn't finish it off either. I really expected this thing to shatter into 10 pieces on the first jolt, but it's still holding together just fine. I'm pretty sure it's because the cracks don't go all the way to the edge, but still . . . I mean even the new Coleman #20 mantle didn't fall apart. Maybe those new ones aren't as bad as we think. And my new springs on the Jeep, which I installed to get the front end a little more level after adding a winch and steel bumper, are fairly stiff, too.

Just thought it was kinda curious.

I have a beat up 288 that had a super glued globe when I got it two years ago. It has been the lantern I let my son use on hunting, camping and 4wheeling trips. I call it the "stunt lantern" because it gets kicked around and I told my son that if it broke to try to save the pieces and we'd glue it again. It is still holding up. He has it at his buddy's cabin right now or I'd post a pic.
Glue yours up and roll with it.

I had a cracked globe on a Nite Hawk lantern that I was using all year. The heat/cooling cycles wasn't making the cracks grow. Then a real cold Winter with that lantern stored in my truck the cracks grew and piece fell out. That was the end of that globe.

Bonneville salt flats, what a place. I’ve been trying to go to the SCTA Speedweek for the last few years. Love it up there, and the land speed racing community is very similar to the Coleman collectors community. I’d venture to say even overlapping. Planning m trip for this August as we speak 😀

Another vote for super glue. Apply it to the crack and use a razor blade to shave off the excess when dried. If you don't shave it down, anywhere it's thick will most likely turn dark.

Good to see another satisfied 425C chef! :cf_cooking:

I bought mine about 30 years ago from a friend over in Cripple Creek (or maybe it was Victor). The stove worked perfectly then and still does. Watch out for those sharp corners!

I bought a 275 with this globe basically to replace another that broke in 3 pieces, (which I super glued). What I didn't notice was this replacement one was cracked too. Super glued it 2 days ago. Used gorilla super glue. Cleaned the dried excess like Jim said. Ran it for hours last night with no problems.

I've got others I've glued with super-glue. I began doing this after reading about it here on the forum a few years back. I was surprised to see it last so long with out it and some rough use.

That glued globes can last is encouraging news. This Tilley came with a glued globe and I've been worried about what will happen when I get around to firing it up.

>>Just a fyi, if you very carefully make a small drill hole at the end of a crack in glass. It will help prevent the crack from travelling.

Can a hole be bored through borosilicate glass? I had not heard of this myself.

I've got an original 228E globe that is cracked, gotten longer with use, now about 3" long. I have a fresh unopened tube of Gorilla Super glue. So do you recommend applying the glue to the inside of the globe or the outside, both surfaces or does it matter?

Flex it slightly and work it inside the crack. You want NOTHING left on the outside...

Oh, don't use the "gel" type of super glue...

I’m not sure about borosilicate glass. I have used with plastic and glass emblems to prevent a crack from traveling. An older antique outboard mechanic/hobbyist explained the process to me.

Basically, a very small rounded hole at the end of a crack will stop the cracks expansion. Heating and cooling cause plastic or glass to slightly flex (expansion and contraction) some and increase the length of crack travel. If caught early, then the glass or plastic maybe spared further damage.

I have done it mostly with plastic emblems and hoods on vintage outboards.

After looking up borosilicate glass properties, It would be more challenging.

Recommendation of using:

Tape over the site to prevent wandering.

Low speed drill settings is a must

Diamond tip type drill bit with very little and slow pressure applied.

Wear a mask to prevent glass dust inhalation

Wear eye protection to prevent glass dust exposure

Protect exposed skin.

Have water applied to surface to decrease dust and heat. Light weight oil is acceptable.

Glass submerged in water can also be drilled with low speed cordless drill.

That is basically what I just read, so my statement recommending drilling borosilicate glass is withdrawn. It can be done, but with lengthy procedural steps that most people would not take.

Good catch Jim. Some tricks of another hobby do not necessarily transfer to another.
