Good Morning Vietnam!!!

#1

Post by A Seabee »

Picked up my 1967 Milspec today, posted yesterday before I had it in my hands. Wasn't much of a fettle. just cleaned off the dirt, tied a mantle on, oiled the pump leather, fired it off. It had a very clean fuel in it that ran ok, but smelled sorta like gasoline. I ran it for a while then poured it out and refilled with fresh white gas. Here it is running on the smelly gasoline. ordered a funnel, fuel cap with chain, wrench/pricker and parts well cap from OCP

That looks to be in awesome condition, and certainly running well.

Experience is a wonderful thing. It enables you to recognize a mistake when you make it again.

Flammable liquids, open flame, what could go wrong?

It's quite possible, or it was old leaded fuel, or a combination. I don't know

Thanks!

Just kidding Dan about napalm. Your title reminded me of the movie “Apocalypse Now” and its reference to napalm by Robert Duvall.

Thank you! It was losing pressure, so I also burned out and replaced the cap seal. Now it sounds like a jet engine!

This is one of the nicest lanterns I've ever purchased, the only one nicer was a 79 200a that was maybe fired once. And all this love/hate with Milspecs? there's no hate here, and all love. Kelly advised me to heat the generator, then put the glass and vent back on and fire it up. They always start fairly easily using this method. occasionally they will flood once or twice before then gen is warmed up, but that's it. oh, and the low pressure start followed by pumping it until your thumb hurts makes it roar like an SR71 on takeoff

It looks to be in great shape.
Mine was seriously corroded, probably with hardly any of the original olive drab paint left. Someone earlier hastily painted it over with a different dark green which I later removed.

That sure did clean up nice! Amazing what a fresh fount of fuel and a cleaning rag can accomplish. Nice score!

Nice mil-spec one of mine is a 67 AFM. It is definitely better than my SMP. They are my least used lanterns but my dad was in Vietnam 66/67. So I had to have it. Same with my 523 stove. I give a big nod to him and all the others that served over there every time I pick one of them up.

"Maybe smelled of napalm.😏" Much better than smelling of Agent Orange.
Many veterans of Vietnam are dying every day from the effects of that dreaded concoction.

Good-looking lantern, Dan. Nothing like the roar of fire to put a smile on one's face!
