Bring a Trailer for GPA’s…your thoughts

Post by onehundredLL »

Question for the group.

I’ve spent the last two months building a website patterned after bringatrailer but for guitars and amps (I’m into those).

It’s finally in a presentable condition, and ready to host auctions. The auctions obviously need users to work so I’m going to build that base by sharing classifieds and auctions from the major sites. If enough eyes come around auctions and exclusives could work. It’s fun for me, and I thought the guitar market could use its own BaT.

So that sets up the question. I could take my work and port it to a dedicated site for lanterns and stoves.

What do you all think about having a low cost alternative (3% instead of 9% and nobody gets in the middle of the transaction to collect taxes and fees)?

I kind of like the idea, if you can get traction in the market.

I'm sending the link for your guitar/amp site to a friend who's having to get rid of most of his large collection of electric guitars and amps. He's an avid guitarist and has some true classics but is suffering from health problems and can't play anymore.

Very professional looking site, BTW!

ha :D
but bringatrailer moves something like $500k to a million dollars in listings per day! I’ll be lucky to move a grand (which would gross the site thirty dollars). $30 a day, servers cost me about $2 per day. credit card processing another $1. It’s beer money leftover and maybe some white gas :D

I worked quite hard on the thing…several thousand hours. I appreciate the positive feedback, makes me feel good.

Have your friend contact me through the site or I can give you my info as well to pass along.

I went live with it 3 days ago to an inner circle for some feedback. Currently there’s only a handful of users. So obviously auctions would not work at this point for lack of observers, but the backend is there and proven.

Having said that, I could (and would like to) work with your friend to do some exclusive listings that I would promote around the various guitar sites (I’m a member of pretty much all of them, because I scrounge around for interesting classifieds to share…something that’s both fun for me and my plan to grow the base). I can draft up the listings and it could be a good way for him to thin out the herd with less pain.

That is a professional looking site!

>>nobody gets in the middle of the transaction to collect taxes

I would check with your local tax authority on this instead of waiting for a visit from them. Perhaps taxes aren't required if not selling new.

That’s how bring a trailer works. They are just the auction site, and at the end they give the buyer and seller contact information and bow out. Therefore they are separated from the transaction. The auction site does nothing other than negotiate the price…leaving tax collection to the selling party as a private sale. eBay inserts themselves in the transaction and thus are required to collect tax.

I don't know if you're aware, but eBay started because a husband was looking for an outlet for his wife to buy/sale/trade PEZ dispensers. PEZ.............. the rest is history

I didn't understand the 'bring a trailer', but now think you're in a perfect situation since you're not a middle man, but the facilitator.

I never heard of BaT either... But thanks, I just spent 45+ minutes drooling over stuff I can't afford!

I think it'd be a good venture for lanterns and stoves.

I'll set it up next week...and let the forum know. For guitars, which average maybe a grand per, I made the listings fee $15. For stoves and lanterns I'll reel that way back to something like $2 - so it's going to be a pure hobby but should be fun.

well it’s ready.

Let me roll it out this way:
- I need 5 guys to agree to help me test it (you’ll need to create your account)
- I’ll set up an auction for a pack of mantles or something simple like that
- we’ll let it run as a test

After a successful test run I’ll share the website wide.

PM me if you want to be a tester (incentive for testers, you’ll be able to list for free (well let’s call it like 5 cents so i can run my system …forever)

I'm in. Are you going to call it "Bring a Fettle"? (BaF) Or maybe Bring a Mantle (BaM!)

Just a quick update. I've been working on the submission forms. Good progress but not ready nor tested. Once that's done I'll make it public

Submission forms are complete. Waiting for a beta tester to give them a run, but they are certainly good enough for a start.
So this project should get off the ground. It might crash back down on the runway in a ball of flame for lack of interest…so I’ve requested equipment to roll on standby.
