Economy 408

Post by REJ2 »

Found what I believe is an Economy 408 today. It was cheap enough so I brought it home. Needs correct generator and ball nut.

I forget what lantern generator fits the same as the Economy 408. I’ll rack my brain and get back to you. I have from the valve to the frame, it currently rides on a 327 fount with either a Nulite or AirO vent.

Thank you!

Thank you Kevin, the R-55 that came with it has only 1/64 of an inch penetration.

I’m pretty sure I have my original economy generator on the lantern here. In this thread I mention it fit my Justrite table lamp. I’ll pull them out tomorrow and see if they function interchangeably.
Dean made the generator and nut for the Justrite. I made a mistake when I installed the Justrite which requires I remove a burner tube to remove the generator and prick the generator. Dean warned me and my impatience got the better of me. Removing the generator has been on my list for over a year.
Since I emailed info to Dean I should be able to provide dimensions maybe he has shop notes. Actually we can get exact dimensions from the original generator though I feel the Economy construction is substandard.
The Justrite was made with a wedge at the valve kinda like a Nulite, the Economy had a flat protrusion that when wrapped with graphite behaved like the wedge.

Another one I have to look for. I'm in love with Mica lanterns.
Looking for 06/02 and 07/00 lanterns for my sons. 5/75 for me, but I think none were made.

This is what the generator should look like for that lantern .

I found a 408 early on when I started collecting about 7 years ago, IIRC the fount had issues and needed sealed or replaced, I let it go with other lanterns rather than mess with it.

Ernie that’s the one! Got a spare?

Mark, that is a nice one, the fount on mine is in good shape both cosmetically and functionally. I don’t know how much my vent will polish up though.

Ahh
Looks like another version of the 408? With the model ? burner?

Yes I’m confused, these are confusing!

Thank you!

My burner looks like the last pic of the Economy 4 pics, that generator has more curve than the one Ernie posted, but it looks like it would work. I might be able to stretch a Q99 (pull the loop tighter) generator to get a little more engagement.

Notice the nut differences, I’m assuming Ernie’s was off a model 2 burner, mines a three with a female nut like your number four.

Thank you!

Im thinking mine has a male nut like the R-55, which is what i have on there now. Very last pic of Economy 4 shows a male fitted nut to the generator, at least it appears to me that way.
