OT: Squirrel tails to Mepps
Just got a Mepps catalog, which means two things. Almost time to get some lines wet and Mepps buys squirrel tails!

Re: OT: Squirrel tails to Mepps
I wonder if they pay more for the tails of those black squirrels over the border in Ontario?

Re: OT: Squirrel tails to Mepps
We have Black squirrels in a few locations here in Pa. but you don't often see them.
Well your not going to get rich selling them squirrel tails. I'll bet there worth a lot more than 16 cents to the squirrel.

I think I'll let Kitty do the work. (Yes, Kitty is her real name.)
She catches about a squirrel a day in the spring and summer, and eats it all except the four little feet and the tail. Little killer...

Re: OT: Squirrel tails to Mepps
I guess I don't shoot enough bushytails to make it worth it to send them to Mepp's. But, I have dressed up my worn spinners with hair from squirrel tails. We have blacks, grays, and fox squirrels where I hunt in Michigan.

I have an artist friend that , when I first met him, called chipmunks “paintbrushes”. I asked why he called them that and his reply was that he made sets of paintbrushes out of their tales for his niece and nephew. Now every time I see one it’s a “paintbrush “ . I can’t help it and I can’t imagine the patience or process it takes. Not sure I wanna know!

Next to morel hunting in the spring, one of the things I look forward to every year is our local squirrel tournament the Saturday after Thanksgiving in booger hollow (yes that's the actual name) this was a bad haul and we didn't even get into the money, but we had a blast none the less!

I used Black Fury’s and the Daredevil red/white trolling for pike and Walleye occasionally a fish would jump outa the water and I would have a bass.

Re: OT: Squirrel tails to Mepps
Where I grew up in SE Michigan we had fox squirrels that were brown. Fox squirrels here are big as cats, black with white tail tips, ears, paws and sometimes white faces.
I almost ran off the road the first time I saw one sitting on a stump. Looked like a circus monkey sitting up on its hind legs.

Re: OT: Squirrel tails to Mepps
Mepps makes the best spinners, no doubt about that. I used to beat Mepps at their own game, buy the components, a wire jig, get squirrel tails from hunters free and make my own spinners. If you buy good quality components, not the cheap stuff, you have a spinner as good as Mepps. I used to buy from Angler's Workshop, http://www.anglersworkshop.com/Spinner-BladesANG , . I built a lot of fishing rods from Anglers Workshop. My dad got me started in building my own rods and I took it to the next level. Those days of barefoot wandering the countryside fishing the neighborhood ponds I will always treasure. The childhood wandering was before my rod and lure building days but it was the foundation for it.

Re: OT: Squirrel tails to Mepps
Do they take rat tails too? I’ve trapped this with a Duke #110 trap I got the day before yesterday.
I was in my patio burning some citronella in my Amish conversion lantern yesterday and heard a hard click around 9:00 PM went all over the spot I have my traps set and wooala a rat was between the trap jaws. I’m glad I’ve watched all the “Mountain Men” episodes and thanks to Tom (the oldest man in the series) for his “musk rat” trap teaching, in this case “roof rat” hahaha gotta love TV sometimes

Larry,
That's gotta be worth more than $.16. I'd hold out for at least a quarter on that one!
