Cool looking mantle

#1

Post by JimL »

I thought this mantle had a cool look to it. It looks as if the burner screen is inside of the mantle. Hey, it is inside of the mantle!

I'm now starting to wonder if this lantern was really unfired before I lit it today.

I had one that did the same thing on a 201.

You know you can prevent them from falling out like that Jim. Gravity is your friend.

Why is it that it always seems to be the single mantle lanterns that do this? More concentrated heat?

The double mantle lamps/lanterns would have a hard time falling out since they go in the burner cap from the inside I believe Chuck.

That they do Toby, but I've got a CQ that had one 200 burner cap and the other one was only about half there. Enough erosion and they'll all fall out. I suspect the biggest reason the singles are where we see this is that they're well worn singles. My 201 spent most of its life in Australia. It has a much loved look to it.

That brings up something I've been wondering about. I've seen single mantle burner caps on Quicklites in the past, I wonder how they work?... Do they fill the mantle correctly? Might be a good way to make the 2C-HGs form correctly on double mantles, instead of the goofy looking balls they usually make... I know a double mantle burner cap doesn't work on a single mantle at all. Acts like a plugged up burger tube...

Double mantle burner doesn't work well on a one legged double burner either. Over-burns the remaining mantle bad enough that I aborted the experiment.

Bigger burner cap might be a solution. It's always good to learn by doing, even if you learn it doesn't work at all.

I've seen single mantle (200/242) burner caps on Leacock burners which are essentially 220F burners. They work just fine, mantles fill out nice because of the larger diameter cap. They look weird because that's not what we're used to.
