Sunshine safety lamp
Sunshine safety lamp
Just got all the parts I needed for this one. Nickel was gone but it looks pretty sweet with the mica shade. Thanks to Toby for telling me about those shades.

Re: Sunshine safety lamp
Sweet looking lamp Mike. I like the generator. Looks like an Economy on my generator chart. I want to bend up some like that. Just for fun I want to make a cork screw shaped generator.
The shade looks good on there. Are you running a globe under the shade? The mica will probably stand the heat. Looking forward to a temperature report.

I went ahead and got a new generator from Mike. I needed the cap anyways and sure if I didnt get a new generator the one on it would not work. Right now Im running the new one and when I get time Ill see if i can get the other one cleaned and useable. Yes I do have a globe under it. The mica is pretty hot but been running now for close to an hour and no issues.

Re: Sunshine safety lamp
Don't have to worry about the mica. It's like see-through stone. A mineral that is not bothered by heat. Remember, the Air-O-Lanterns (327 type) came with "globes" made from mica, 'cept when they are made of mica they are called a chimney. No, I don't know why.

I believe the correct term is "enabling"

Thanks Dean. I think the bigger concern is if the frame can handle it.Deanofid wrote: ↑Tue Feb 23, 2021 3:08 am Don't have to worry about the mica. It's like see-through stone. Re: Sunshine safety lamp
Mike and I have been talking (PM) about another Sunshine Safety I have been looking at, so here are some picks.
The generator is stuck, that is I could not budge it with my fingers and you can see the knurled nut is stuck and not threaded down. That original one of yours is different with the 'S' shape. This one is straight. It should come loose with either a warm citric acid bath or some propane heat. Should there be anything inside it, or just a gas tip at the top? I have heard of using brass wool as packing.
Mike's has a Coleman lantern like air tube. The SS air tube I am looking at is a tube into a short perpendicular tube. I don't remember what the mixing chamber looks like. The Terry Marsh site says these were from the mid teens to 1923ish.

Looks like a Gloria burner to me Gary.

Mines obviously a little different, but similar at the same time

Here is a Gloria generator from about 1916 I just found on the Marsh site. Didn't find the exact lantern though. Similar knurled nut.
Thanks Toby, Gar

Re: Sunshine safety lamp
Oh sure, I just found out what a Gloria is. There are parts falling out of the sky around here, so you never know.
Keep you apprised. G-Man over and out
PS: no nut on top of the one I found. Does yours have that?

Re: Sunshine safety lamp
On the generator? Yes the one you have pictured looks identical to mine, just in better shape. Mine was designed for Kerosene, maybe for ease of maintenance?
