Aggressive, vicious dog, do you have one?
A few of my neighbors have very vicious or at the least "at the fence, going crazy, barking" dogs. Went jogging yesterday without Repo and one neighbor a few minutes away had a couple of their dogs get out and attack me. Managed to mostly fend them off, but still had a small chunk taken off of my hand. I was able to slap the one dog along its head which hurt it and really showed some teeth then. Thinking later I should have swung downward. They drove me to the ER, may be a good idea to deal with your dog if overly aggressive.

Re: Aggressive, vicious dog, do you have one?
Holy cow Duane! That is a scary encounter and I hope you heal quickly. Some people don't take the time to train their dog or give it the attention it needs. A lot of breeders will temperament test their puppy's and I've heard of dogs being put down if they don't pass the test.. We have a few dogs in your neighborhood that are like that, one being a large breed dog that already bit two kids in our neighborhood. I don't know how the dog hasn't been put down after that. The owners had to put a fence up in their backyard for the dog to stay in ( A very cheap one ). When we walk around the block with our dog who is very well trained Ridgeback, the other dogs go nuts and most of our neighbors dogs just stand there wanting to play. When we go hiking I always carry a sidearm, I sometimes carry when we walk around the block just because of that one dog, he will move around his fenced in backyard and staring you down and bark like crazy. I'll be damn if I let any animal come between me, my family or my pets.
Ken.

Re: Aggressive, vicious dog, do you have one?
Duane. My wife and I don’t have any animals but a neighbor down the road has a couple dogs. A few months ago we were walking and the one came right down on the road and got within a few feet. Needless to say we were both frightened. We managed to walk away but further from our house. I told the wife that I will wait for a ride before I walk back by that dog. Sure enough I flagged a car down and told them the situation. They gave us a lift just past the vicious dog. She drove slowly because it came charging back on the road. We drove on by and they dropped us off so we could continue our walk back to the house. A truly scary situation. I hope you recover quickly and feel bad that that dog got ahold of you. Just thankful because it could have been worse.

.380 in the head. No nee for an aggresive dog. Just my 2 cents.

I would have a police report filed and make the neighbor pay for your doctors visit.

Agreed!
Thank you for the comments and concerns. Not enough skin around the bite to stitch up, so I guess will be a open wound for some time, was hoping to get my old snowmobile back together this week.
With the next door dog, score is 1-19 now. It has chased or attacked Repo and I 19 times, starting when Repo was still a young dog, Repo followed it into its yard last week when we were leaving to go snow camping. I usually have him on leash until we get past the two neighbors with the dogs so he won't go into the one neighbors yard that has a dilapidated fence with the dog chained up.

The hospital takes a report, they will be contacted I believe. They have told me to let them know my expenses.

I live in an open-carry state so my solution to aggressive dogs, aggressive people, potential car-jackers, etc is this...
My dog is not aggressive and I don't appreciate other people having aggressive dogs that come in contact with me.
Here's my dog... Scary looking ain't he?
If it offends someone, too bad. My family and my life matters. I'm exercising my 2nd amendment rights, while I still have them.My dog is not aggressive and I don't appreciate other people having aggressive dogs that come in contact with me.

Re: Aggressive, vicious dog, do you have one?
Wow, Sorry to hear this Duane. When I run, I have a can of pepper spray that I carry with me. I have had it out a few times, but have not had to use it yet. When I come across a property with a dog like this, I have adjusted my running route. Just a sign of a bad owner that should not have a dog. They just do not care about anyone else and most likely the dog too. You are on a public road and have every right to be there.
I had one house that I could not change my route with. They had two dogs that they let run free when they put them outside. Even though the town regulations stated that dogs must be under control at all times. The worse one was a little yap yap dog. It would come close, but not close enough to get sprayed. One time it surprised me before I could get the spray out and tried to bite my foot. It got a good kick in the head. The town I lived in had a animal enforcement officer. I contacted them and let them know what happened and the problems I have had in the past with these dogs. A short time later, no more dogs at the house. I guess my complaint was the one that did it and the dogs were taken away. I knew the person that lived across the street from this house. They said everyone complained about those dogs.
I hope they are paying your medical bills at least. At minimum, you should contact your local Law Enforcement agency and let them know what happened. Get it documented with a report or a ticket. This way, you are covered if you have ongoing medical issues. Also, it is on record that the dog and owner are problems. If they are not paying your medical bills, then a call to a lawyer is in order.

Well, crap!, Duane. I have a friend who always carried a knobkerrie for such situations. I, too, was attacked by a neighbor's dog. It went straight for my crotch. Fortunately, I was wearing a relatively heavy pair of jeans, but it still drew blood. I was quite surprised by the attack because the owner was present, and had the dog on a leash!

I wasn't sure how to react, I was in shorts, lucky I wasn't bitten by the less aggressive dog too. A report was filled out at the hospital. With the snow still, I can't run in another direction, may have to drive a couple miles so I can run.

Re: Aggressive, vicious dog, do you have one?
Sorry to hear that. We have some new neighbors that moved in a year ago - they have two dogs that appear to be aggressive as well. The cause quite a ruckus whenever anyone is in the alley. I take the trash out, it sets them off. Someone walking in the alley, the same. Go out to my car, the same. Big dogs too, and the Dad is always yelling at them and his kids to behave. No wonder they are angry all the time. One jumped the fence a while back, got an animal control call off that from what I heard. My son got nipped by another dog that the someone else in the neighborhood let roam free. I can't stand irresponsible pet owners, and down here I see a lot of them.
Re: Aggressive, vicious dog, do you have one?
As others have said, make a police report to prevent the situation from being a he said/she said situation when the ER bill comes. The police will probably go to the dog owner for a statement letting them know that the dog is a serious liability. I've seen people using "bear spray" that seems to have more range than the typical pepper spray, so that might be an option.

One of my border collies will bit if strangers reach for him or he is startled. He would never chase anybody though. I just keep him away from people. He's never in the shop, or in the town parks.
Thanks for posting, it can be scary. A dog confronting someone on a public road is not acceptable.

I guess a couple of their dogs are what was pawned off to them by a adult kid, he was giving the dog _ell once it was back in the yard.

Sorry to hear Duane, I have been bitten and attacked many times and is why I don't like dogs generally. Started with my own Cocker Spaniel at age 3 when he bit my head with a tooth going inside my eye socket and shook me around. One of my earliest memories. Still have the scar.
A mutt chased me on my bike once in a neighborhood with kids playing, so I rode ahead, raised the bike over my head and slammed him. Ran away yelping. I bet he never attacked a bike again. I'll kill them if I have to.

My sister's dog attacked my nephew once at a birthday party. It didn't take long for a .40 s/w to take care of the problem. The dog had attacked before when I wasn't there. My family wasn't too happy with me, but after leaving the hospital, my nephew is ok.

I hope all works out well for you Duane. I have no tolerance for irresponsible dog owners.
Had a neighbor with a big Rottweiler that always charged at the fence when I was outside. One day he decided he was going to jump the fence and attack me in my own back yard. Dog almost cleared the fence, but ended up hung by one back leg. He actually bent the upper fence tube with his leg. No more fight in him. He was yelping, and on my side of the fence. It was all I could do to pick him up and throw him back onto his side while getting his leg untangled. He never again so much as growled at me but would come to the fence and let me pet him, tail wagging. Neighbor never knew of our encounter.

I have 4 dogs two small ones and two large breeds. I do not socialize my dogs but i do not allow aggressive behavior either. That's for me to do! I do however carry a 1911 with me at all times and have shot a couple of dogs over the years when coming after me or my family. Out where i live you don't have property that goes to the street. Rare to see a dog at the fence here. Duane get well soon and hand the bill to the dog owner with a cop standing by you.

They are trying to do the right thing, came by last night to see how I was doing and left a card with me this AM. The ER Doctor made an appointment for me today to have a specialist look at my hand.
Repo seems naturally socialized, he runs over to most people and dogs to say hi, stopping a few feet away to see what the reception will be like, usually just people in my area. When out hiking, we usually don't see many people and when close to many people, I'll leash him.

Dogs like that need to be handled right away what if it had been a small child unable to fend off the attack.

That’s scary. My wife was attacked by a large breed a few years ago while walking. Luckily, she was wearing a very heavy Russian army coat at the time and just got a bruise on the arm. I like dogs but they are not equally to people........

That sucks, Duane.
I was attached by two dobermans while cycling through a park. The owner yelled, they are friendly! They were not, I took out my water bottle just add one lunged at me and gave him a face full of gator aid. That slowed him down and the other was just following. I moved on because I was out for a long ride. But in retro spect I should have called the police. They could have taken down a kid. Dogs must be on leashes in parks here. Good thing they were friendly!

Thank you guys.
Andy, your dog is pretty mellow, funny though he and the deer are nose to nose.
Specialist just wants me to use a support on my hand, soak in saline twice daily, let the wound dry and scab over. The support/splint keeps the hand from flexing in the middle of the wound which would hinder complete healing.

Re: Aggressive, vicious dog, do you have one?
Sorry to hear about your encounter. I have no tolerance for poorly behaved animals. There is a pit across the street which has broken through the fence more than once to go after other dogs being walked by on a leash. Last time it knocked the lady over and started going after her. Lady was banged up and small dog perforated. I was unloading groceries and sprinted down the driveway to help. The dog is scared of me and ran back to its fence on the outside where I kept it cornered until someone came out of the house. Law enforcement was called and the Humane Society as well. They don't call them Humane Law enforcement officers for nothing. problem mutt has only been seen once or twice, it is either gone or in the back yard. Owner is a less than desirable person, both should be relieved of breathing if you ask me and most of the neighbors. Take care of yourself and press law enforcement to have the dog euthanized. Small dog from the last encounter was ok after a visit to the vet. E.

Sorry to hear about this Duane, No advise as you have already heard it all. Hope the hand heals well and fast.
I've been bit three times in my life. The first one I don't remember, probably the second grade and my visiting aunt's dachshund jumped up and chewed my lip to hamburger. I have NEVER recollected any of it; including the visit to the ER.
The other two were BIG German shepherds. Both got my hip (opposite sides) One on my Paper route, and the other was a neighbors dog "sniffing " me and I saw him prep and turned my hip - otherwise I'd be singing soprano.
None were "justified" as I wasn't doing anything.

I love dogs but can't stand untrained or purposely aggressive trained ones, so I totally agree with the report filing..... and the more permanent solution suggestions.

That’s a nasty bite. I’m sorry. I’ve had some really close calls but never bitten. Agree bad dogs and especially their owners are problems. I carry a wooden fish billy as a deterrent; firearm or pepper spray, sadly, will only get you in big trouble here.

Duane, that's one ugly wound; I sure hope it heals alright for you.
No dog here, but there was a terrible incident in this area in 2017 where a vicious dog attacked children, severely disfiguring one of their faces; I think the police dispatched it on the spot. Dog's owner got 7 years probation, but paid well over $50,000 in restitution and court costs. The judge didn't send him to jail because she wanted him to be able to pay up.
EDIT:I hope YOU don't pay a cent out of your pocket for your medical treatment.

That looks painful, I have a couple of mutts that are very friendly with People, but one of them has some dogfighting background ( was a bait dog)and does not get along with other dogs very well.
A couple of years ago a large dog came out of a house while I was walking my dogs on leash, the dog tried to attack one of my dogs and it did not turn up good for him, my two dogs ( heeler mixes) mauled the dog in seconds, all I saw was the large dog run back to his house yelping with several punctures on the neck and legs. the girls got treats after that, since then I carry a hunting knife while walking, better safe that sorry.

Re: Aggressive, vicious dog, do you have one?
Growing up we had an Irish Setter for bird hunting and a pair of Beagles for rabbit hunting. As an adult we don’t own any dogs only the wife’s cat. We live in a rural farming community with a lot of migrant workers. Why do people feel compelled to bring their pit bulls to a flea market? The aisles aren’t that wide and I don’t feel confident that they have the dog in control. I never thought it would come to this but I am going to start open carrying at certain flea markets.

Re: Aggressive, vicious dog, do you have one?
That's a nasty bite Duane. I hope you make a full recovery with no infections. I used to walk two big Pit/Lab mix dogs. When they were young, I felt comfortable that they could protect me. When it was just two of us, both old dogs now, her and I, I didn't feel so comfortable.
I'd prefer not to shoot any aggressive dog that attacked us. Fast moving target, in close, tough shot, and noisy. I felt comfortable enough using a long leash with a weighted end and a change pouch on my belt with twenty-five dollar coins in it. Like the punch you got in on the dog, I felt that these would put a good thump on an aggressive dog and keep me just out of bite range. The big girl and I walked just as long as she was able.
Running? I'd be in the same situation you were. What can you carry for defense? A local retired Marine carries what I always thought was a light wooden dowel. It's actually a white six foot long fiberglass antenna and wouldn't be something I'd want to be hit with. Good range, jab or swing, and possibly more important from a dogs viewpoint, it's a visible deterrent.

Paging DR Winchester. Had a run in with a neighbor there dog was attacking our pony. So I shot it. They claimed the dog was like family and tried to send me some bill for the dog. I in turn gave them the vet bill. Problem solved haven’t heard a peep about it since. Funny how they lost all the love for that dog suddenly.

When I was a kid, back in the dark ages, I used to ride my bike to school, & any time I wanted to go to town ( we lived about a mile outside a small burg). The neighbors up the street had a German shepherd that would chase me, & several times try to bite me. We had complained several times, but to no avail. Finally my dad told me to take a squirt gun, & fill it with ammonia, & spray the dog with it the next time it came after me....this was long before the days of pepper spray, etc. The next time he came after me, I sprayed at him frantically with the squirt gun, & totally by chance, managed to him him squarely in his open mouth. He made a noise I'd never heard from a dog before, turned tail & ran. After that, any time I'd ride by, he'd sit in his driveway, & watch me ride by...never had a problem with him again.

Gee Duane, I thought jogging was supposed to be good for you! Nasty wound but glad it wasn't even worse. Dogs and runners or bicycle riders seem to be a long time problem. My dad strangled an attacking dog when he was about 12 years old. That would have been about 1905.

My goodness! That looks awful, Duane. I hope you heal up well and don't run into any complications.
You seem to be handling this in a composed manner, not sure I could do the same.

Well if the law and insurance companies don't do their jobs...shoot, shovel, and shut up in these parts.

I have to agree with you. 1st that dog would have been dispatched and the owner of the the dispatched dog would need extensive dental work and a damn deep checkbook. Dwayne I hope for your sake that heals correctly as that looks gnarly as hellRidge_Runner wrote: ↑Thu Feb 25, 2021 2:45 pm My goodness! That looks awful, Duane. Good golly, Duane. That's gonna leave a mark!
I spend a couple of hours a day walking my 60lb aussie. He's tough as nails, loves to fight, and can handle himself against most encounters. But I carry pepper spray gel and I hit the aggressors before they reach him to avoid anyone getting hurt. They probably think he's a fire breathing dragon, but after one application, we don't have any more problems there. I recommend pepper, wherever legal, for all walkers, joggers.
Take care of that wound Duane. Man I would have been terrified.

Looks pretty bad Duane; I hope it heals well and quickly. I have zero tolerance for an aggressive dog. I love my beagles... sure they can be a little noisy and smelly, but so sweet and gentle. I walk them on leashes, and when my neighbor's Aussie Cattle dogs (never on a leash) approach us when we walk and try to get behind my girls and nip at them, I have no problem giving them a swift kick...

When I lived on the east side of MI I actually worked at an automobile plant in the city of Detroit. The manufacturing facility was an oasis surrounded by ghetto.
I had a 3rd shift millwright that was a member of the Outlaws M/C he lived about 50 miles north of the plant. He had dropped off a tire at a local auto repair shop to be repaired. The next morning he stopped on the way home to pick up the tire. A junk yard dog came out and grabbed him by his left forearm (luckily he had a leather jacket on). Johnny grabbed his knife, stabbed the dog in the neck and killed it. He then walked into the office, paid for the repair, grabbed his tire and never told the proprietor about his dog.

Re: Aggressive, vicious dog, do you have one?
You would think by all the barking and growling my little male Dashshund does that he is very aggressive. But it's all show he's a coward. If I open the door while he's doing his show he looks at me like " What the heck you doing Dad" then goes into his kennel and sulks. I don't do that often because well you just never know when he won't stop. But he's only like that while we are in the house outside he fairly well behaved. Also when we are outside he always on a leash maybe that's the difference.
That wound is gonna suck for while Duane. When you said it took a hunk out of your hand you weren't kidding. Hope it heals quickly and properly.
